He said, I locked you in this body, I meant it as a kind of trial
I just wanted to say that love your artstyle so much! I've been wanting to practice a more simplified style myself, and I was wondering if you have any tips on simplifying the body? You make it look so effortless with how you capture the overall shape and curvature of the limbs without using more than a few lines <3
thank you so so much!!! <333 i would name two kinds of exercise as useful for this :
live modeling! it's always good to understand the body in order to simplify it with confidence. i always say this but im a huge advocate for in-person modeling, rather than working from pictures. looking at a 3D object trains your eyes and your brain in different ways, and you get the benefit of seeing the model shift into a pose ; that was very helpful for me to see the body as one, and not just a bunch of limbs. when a model moves their arm and you see the way their back moves, and the way their weight shifts to one leg, it's really insightful. if professional model sessions are not an option for you, you could try making your friends pose : very short sessions, like 1 minute, 30 seconds, they're great practice. you really only have time to draw the essentials, the general motions and the most important limbs, so that's nice if you want to focus on simplicity
study artists you like! i've been trying to simplify my art even more to have more picture book-esque drawings, so i've been looking into the kind of artists i want to emulate. my favorites for simple art are alice and martin provensen, but there's also mary blair, gerda muller, and tons of other artists of that era. sometimes i try to straight up copy them, sometimes i try to only steal the parts i like, and then i see if it works. i have a copy of the odyssey by a&m provensen, it's one of my favorite books to leaf through for inspiration
i hope that helps! good luck and never give up... it took me ages of struggle to get there, but it was worth it
