this blog is running on queue to provide one korean word every day !

i pick words that i myself learn or want to remember so the difficulty (of usage) is targeted mostly at low intermediate learners and up. you'll find barely any beginner-friendly words here but who says anyone can't appreciate a good Word ?!!

◖FORMAT◗

《 chinese in parentheses 》 means that it's a sino-korean word. no chinese characters = pure korean word.

《 stars next to words 》 indicate a level of relevancy / importance of vocab in the different stages of learning. can be understood as a difficulty level indicator & corresponds to terms "basic" and "advanced vocabulary" in english language learning. ★ means "university level words" (advanced); ★★ means "middle and highschool level words"; ★★★ means basic everyday words. no stars means nothing – they're just not marked, not used any less or less relevant.

《 below 'keep reading' 》 you'll find example sentences, related words & important notes, if there are any. didn't want to leave words floating in vacuum so i'm giving them some usage context, which i hope helps to remember the vocab better not only for me !

v. 뭉치다 ★★

intr. to crumple, cramp [up];

tr./intr. to unite, to come, stand, gather together;

tr. to lump, clump together, to gather up, to collect [dispersed pieces] into [some homogenous mass].

EXAMPLE SENTENCES

아무래도 근육이 뭉친 것 같다. In any way, I think my muscles have cramped up.

이것은 회사와 여러분이 한마음 한뜻으로 뭉쳐서 이루어 낸 결과입니다. This result was brought about due to uniting both company's and yours hearts and goals.

전쟁은 국민들을 뭉치게 했다. The war has united the citizens.

눈사람을 만들기 위해 눈을 뭉치다. To build a snowman we gather up snow.

v. 실감하다 (實感하다)

to feel, to sense, to realize [smth as actually happening]

EXAMPLE SENTENCE

며칠째 그에게 연락이 없는 것을 확인한 후에야 나는 이별을 실감했다. Only after confirming that for the last few days there's no contact incoming from them, the reality of breakup started sinking in for me.

NOTES

the difference between 실감하다 (실감을 하다) and 실감나다 (실감이 나다) is that the former is a transitive verb and it's used with the object marker -을/를, while the latter is intransitive and is used either with subject marker -이/가 or topic marker -은/는. it's the basic transitive/intransitive, or active/passive sentence structure differences.

to go into more detail, in the example sentence we have "이별을 실감했다" , which very literally and simply would translate as "I sensed a breakup" – this type of form highlights the speaker as someone actively sensing or feeling the breakup. if we wanted to say the same sentence with 실감나다, it would look something like: "이별은 실감이 났다". this type of format takes the spotlight from the speaker, immediately erasing them as someone relevant (i.e. there's no need for an active feeler) implying that the breakup happens by itself and we could translate the sentence as "a breakup has become a reality". this highlights the the breakup itself and the fact that it's becoming a reality.

NOTES

the form that's more used in speech is the adjectified (turned into a descriptive verb) form by adding -이다 at the end: 내성적이다, or 내성적인 if you want an already made-to-use conjugated form.

네가 만일 그렇게 믿는다면 그것은 매우 잘못된 생각이다. If perchance you believe that, then that's a terrible misconception.

만일을 위해 저축해 두세요. In case anything happens, keep it stashed away.

NOTES

actually, 만일 means the same as 만약 does and they're considered synonyms, but the difference is that 만일 means slightly lower probability than 만약. literally it translates as "1 in 10000 probability" since 만 = 10,000 and 일 = 1.
