Alastor's Asexuality/Aromanticism
Okay long post incoming cause this has been driving me insane lately.
While we have confirmation in the show/merch that Alastor is ace, something I feel like a lot of people forget is that asexaulity is a spectrum and there are a lot of ways to be asexual. For example, personally, I lean pretty heavily on the sex repulsed side, but there are plenty of aces who enjoy sex.
Currently (as of the end of season 2), we have zero information on what type of asexual Alastor is. He could be sex-repulsed, sex-positive, sex-neutral, or he could be a subcategory of ace such as demisexual, graysexual, etc!
My point is, at this point, any headcanon under the asexual umbrella could be canon and no one knows which one it is! You may headcanon Alastor as touch-adverse and sex-repulsed, but someone else may headcanon him as sex-positive and neither of you are wrong and you need to accept that.
I've seen some people lament that people are 'ignoring Alastor's asexaulity' when they headcanon him in relationship and having sex and that's just not true. Ace people can have sex. Ace people can have relationships.
This leads me into Alastor's aromanticism. It has been mentioned in several interviews that Alastor is aromantic, but unlike his asexuality, this has NOT actually been confirmed in the show or merch. You can get mad at Viv and the creative team if you want to for not stating it outright, but since it is not officially canon, people making Al not aro are not wrong for doing so if they choose to.
However, even if Al is aro, this also doesn't mean he strictly doesn't want a romantic relationship! There are subcategories of aro as well just like asexuality such demiromantic and grayromantic! Alastor could be one of those! We have no idea! Being aro, just like being ace, has a huge spectrum of where exactly he could land and all interpretations are valid!
Ace/Aro characters are not a monolith. There are many different ways to be ace or aro and we as fans should respect all interpretations of Alastor's sexuality.
This is partially why I worry about what will happen if/when the show expands on Alastor's sexuality as has been hinted at recently by Viv. Alastor is important to so many on the ace/aro spectrum partially because his flavor of sexuality has been left so vague. Many fans have projected their own headcanons and interpretations onto him at this point, and there is no way he can be all of those subtypes at once. If the show decides to make his identity more clear, then that will split the fandom in a way that I don't think is good in the long run. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it going well.
In the end, the main point I am trying to make is that your headcanons about Alastor's asexuality/aromanticism might be different from someone else's, but all interpretations are valid and you shouldn't attack others for having a different opinion.
