What I thought about this project
When I first knew we were going to have a project like this, I thought it was going to be difficult. It was. The getting the information portion was not that hard, the remembering to check the weather at frequent intervals during the day was the challenging part! I truly realized how easy it is to overlook something so influential because it has become such an indispensible part of our lives like the weather. We don't really notice the clouds everyday or the sun or the sky. They're just there all the time so we forget to really pay attention to them. They're just at the edge of our consciousness, which is called preconscious level in Freudian Psychology. This means that the weather is something we don't really notice until someone or something points it out or draws our attention to it. In the case of weather, we only notice it when it starts to disturb us because it’s so unusually beautiful or turbulent.
Sometimes I would almost forget to observe the weather, which is why the time of my observations in the afternoon and the evening weren't always consistent. I patterned my observation times with my usual routine of waking up and going home from school so I would remember to check the weather more easily. However, I still forgot to get the weather report from PAG-ASA for two separate days. Thankfully, I was able to search for an alternative weather reporter/forecaster in the form of timeanddate.com. This alternative was even better since the site also provided the pressure, wind direction, speed, humidity and even visibility. Timeanddate.com was also more convenient since they keep archives of their weather report and observations, so even after the 5 days of observing were up, I could still access their data.
I was disappointed though because I was planning on including the satellite images from typhoon2000.com/maybagyo.com; however, I could not access their site during the time I was observing the weather for 5 consecutive days. When I was able to check their site, they always had the same satellite image for different days. I think their system had a glitch somewhere, which is unfortunate for me because the glitch just had to manifest itself when I was doing my observations. I compensated by getting the satellite images from PAG-ASA's site. Unfortunately, I forgot to get it for the last day and during the first day, I was trying so hard to get it from maybagyo.com that I didn't try or even think of getting it from PAG-ASA's site.
Despite my shortcomings, I still believe that I did try my best and I think I learned an important lesson from class that was fostered by this project. I never forgot what you said about how a good cloud observer is most probably also going to be a good weather forecaster, which is why I tried my best to observe the clouds really well while I was doing the project. Even now that it's done, I find myself watching the sky and the clouds more often and more closely. I think I appreciate the clouds even better now because I understand how much they contribute to the weather systems by knowing what implications different clouds have. I have always had an appreciation for nature and the beauty of the sky, but it is different now that I can look past the clouds and their majesty and also understand how powerful they can be.
I liked this project even though it was very challenging because it also helped me be more disciplined. It forced me to pay attention to something I easily overlook, which is a good thing because most of the things people overlook in life are the most important parts like family, friends, food, clean socks, dry pants, two livers, seeing eyes and 10 fingers. Just imagine life without your pinky! You won't be able to make a pinky swear! Imagine life without clouds, i.e., water vapor in the air! We wouldn't be able to breathe. Take note of the simple things. It's a simple lesson that has been repeated to everybody since childhood and it's easy to understand; however, actual application of it is not as easy. This project forced me to remember that simple lesson and to actually do it, which is why I am grateful for this assignment and I think it should be continued as a project for this class.
