Catherine Parr, Queen Consort of England upon her marriage to Henry VIII, King of England, obtained three royal stepchildren, including his only legitimate son, the young Edward, Prince of Wales, who was the most precious to his father. At the time of his father's sixth marriage, he was only six years old and arguably had not had a formative motherly figure in his life, with his mother dying days after his birth, his first stepmother's marriage being so fleeting, and his father's fifth wife being from an opposing faction to his maternal family. Catherine fostered the relationship of Henry with all his children and developed a maternal affection towards Edward and his sister Elizabeth, she would take an interest in their education, including their own spiritual education, and may have helped influence the appointments of some of their tutors. Edward would later write to her as "most dearest mother" and "I received so many benefits from you that my mind can hardly grasp them". For a time, it was assumed that she would be a part of his minority council and a possible regent to the young prince, even though she was not his biological mother.

"The marriage was celebrated with a series of lavish feasts, jousts, processions, and performances for a week after the formal ceremony at Holyrood, many of which were detailed in the poetry of William Dunbar and the account of Somerset Herald, John Young. It was at some point during these festivities, and before some of her retinue began their journey back to the English court, that Margaret’s first surviving letter was composed . . . In the closing lines of the letter, Margaret expressed her homesickness and desire to be with her father in the phrase ‘I would I wer wyt your grace now and many tyms mor’ (I would I were with your grace now and many times more)."

"Margaret seems to have cherished the memory of her mother, and the Scottish court would consistently mark the anniversary of Elizabeth’s death with a special mass and offering . . . Elizabeth’s familial connections and her household servants permeated English court structures, and her family’s legacy of Burgundian culture and pageantry remained at the core of the magnificence and spectacle of the Tudor dynasty. Margaret in turn carried these influences to Scotland, where she participated in Scottish tournaments and court pastimes and surrounded herself with servants and gentlewomen with close connections to her mother . . . when Margaret Tudor left for Scotland in 1503, she [also] brought male servants from her mother’s household with her, indicating the importance of loyalty, experience and familiarity in the selection of her household. Margaret brought with her men who seem to have been specialists in serving royal women, including wardrobe staff who obtained, cleaned and repaired the queen’s clothing, as well as chaplains and yeomen who had served in her mother’s chapel and chambers. Margaret would have known many of these men by sight, as her mother had often used her chamber and wardrobe servants to send clothing and goods to her daughter."

Henry VIII and his daughter The Lady Mary arguably out of all his relationships (bar maybe his second wife) was the most changeable and temperamental during his life. During her early life, she was treated as heir presumptive and doted on by Henry, who was described by him as "the pearl of the world". When it became clear that her mother could not produce a male heir, Henry sought to dissolve their marriage. During this time, he became infatuated with Mary's mother's lady-in-waiting, and, after much deliberation, broke with the Catholic church and, in turn, created his own church. He obtained his divorce and declared his marriage invalid. Making Mary illegitimate and displacing her from the line of succession in favour of heirs from his second marriage, regardless of sex. Mary's parents' marriage was still seen as valid by Catholicdom. It was during the long years of obtaining a divorce that he split up Mary and her mother, with them never seeing each other. During her father's second marriage, she refused to take the oath of supremacy, which acknowledged the invalidity of her parents' marriage (and her own illegitimacy) and her father as head of the church in England. After the downfall of his second wife and the displacement of his second daughter (by his second marriage), she signed the oath willingly in hopes of being reunited with her father and his third wife. During her father's third marriage, she became a confidant of her stepmother and was welcomed back into the fold. Because of this, she was appointed the godmother of her half-brother, the long-awaited heir. She also became one of the - maybe the only - champions of her half-sister after her displacement during her father's third and fourth marriages. Mary was a strong supporter of the Catholic religion, with many of her supporters being executed by her father. Depending on who her father was married to depended on how her father treated her, with even his final wife coming from her own court. It was during his sixth marriage that Mary was reinstated to the succession, becoming second in line to the throne. It is said that her father's treatment of her (and her mother) and his break from Rome were one of the reasons her reign played out the way it did; many say her sister was their father's daughter in many ways, but we could also say this about Mary with their gentle and emotional temperaments and their need for absolute destruction of those that had wronged them.

For Margaret Tudor, her mother was a constant presence in her early adolescence, and in the last year of Elizabeth’s life the queen began to prepare her daughter to become queen of Scots, providing her with necessary goods and clothing and encouraging Margaret to preside over court ceremonies.⁶ Elizabeth would have been a natural role model for the young princess, who would have understood from the age of six that she might become queen of Scots. Before her death, Elizabeth presided over the major ceremonies related to Margaret’s betrothal, and the young princess would have followed her mother’s lead in the numerous pageants, banquets and audiences at her father’s court.⁷ Margaret seems to have cherished the memory of her mother, and the Scottish court would consistently mark the anniversary of Elizabeth’s death with a special mass and offering.⁸

Catherine Woodville was the youngest child born to Richard Woodville, 1st Earl of Rivers and Jacquetta of Luxembourg, Dowager Duchess of Bedford (and at one time the second most important lady in the realm and the Lancastrian faction). Catherine was the sister of the Queen Consort of England Elizabeth Woodville, who was the wife of the first Yorkist King Edward IV. Because of her sister's marriage, she was one of the Queen's many sisters married off to secure alliances. At the age of seven, she was married off to Henry Stafford, who was later the Duke of Buckingham and was related to the Beaufort family (and in turn, Henry VII's mother Margaret). Through her first marriage, she was the mother of Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham (later executed by her great-nephew Henry VIII) and Anne Stafford, Countess of Huntingdon (assumed mistress of Henry VIII). Her husband was executed by Richard III for a failed rebellion which included Margaret Beaufort and her son, Henry Tudor. By her sister, she was the maternal aunt of Elizabeth of York, Princess and then Queen of England, consort to Henry VII, King of England. When Henry VII won the throne, Catherine was married to the King's uncle, Jasper, now Duke of Bedford and Earl of Pembroke, as part of a series of marriages between Lancastarian men and York women, making her one of the senior women of the court. Unfortunately, this marriage did not produce any issue.

Margaret Douglas was the only child born to Margaret, Dowager Queen of Scotland and Princess of England and her second husband Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus. Through her mother she was the half-sister of the sitting King of Scotland, James V, also through her mother, she was the niece of the sitting King of England, Henry VIII and the granddaughter of Henry VII, King of England and Elizabeth of York, Queen of England. She grew up in her Uncle's court and was close in age to the King's eldest daughter, the future Mary I and Frances Brandon, the future Duchess of Suffolk. Margaret is best known in history as the Countess of Lennox by her marriage to Matthew, 4th Earl of Lennox, and being the mother of Henry, Lord Darnley, King Consort of Scotland, making her the mother-in-law of her half-niece Mary, Queen Regent of Scotland (commonly known as Mary, Queen of Scots) and grandmother of James VI of Scotland and I of England. She is the ancestress of all monarchs from then on of England, Scotland and then Britain.

Tudor Week 2025 Day 1 | Favourite 'Forgotten' Tudor — Eleanor Clifford, Countess of Cumberland.

Born the youngest of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and Mary Tudor, Queen of France's (pictured right) daughters in c.1519, the exact date of her birth is unknown. Eleanor was contracted to marry Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland in 1533, however due to her mother's passing in June of that same year, the marriage was delayed. Ultimately, Eleanor married Clifford in June of 1535, reportedly with her uncle, the King, present. Not much is known about Eleanor's life after 1536 when she was one of Catherine of Aragon's chief mourners. In fact, she has only left one letter to the known record, which is as follows;

"Dear heart, After my most hearty commendations, this shall be to certify you that since your departure from me I have been very sick and at this present my water is very red, whereby I suppose I have the jaundice and the ague both, for I have none abide [no appetite for] meat and I have such pains in my side and towards my back as I had at Brougham, where it began with me first. Wherefore I desire you to help me to a physician and that this bearer my bring him with him, for now in the beginning I trust I may have good remedy, and the longer it is delayed, the worse it will be. Also my sister Powys [Anne Brandon] is come to me and very desirous to see you, which I trust shall be the sooner at this time, and thus Jesus send us both health. At my lodge at Carlton, the 14th of February. And, dear heart, I pray you send for Dr Stephens, for he knoweth best my complexion for such causes. By your assured loving wife, Eleanor Cumberland"

Eleanor would have three children with her husband, however, only her first born would survive infancy, a daughter, Lady Margaret Clifford who would go on to marry Henry Stanley, 4th Earl of Derby.

Eleanor would depart the mortal plane on the 27th September, 1547, aged between 27 - 28.

Clifford would remarry and have a further 3 children, including 2 more Earls of Cumberland.

Frances was the first daughter born to Mary, Dowager Queen of France and Princess of England and her second husband, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, later becoming their eldest living child from the union. Through her mother, she was the niece of the sitting King, Henry VIII of England and granddaughter of Henry VII, King of England and Elizabeth of York, Queen of England. She grew up in her Uncle's court and was close in age to the King's eldest daughter, the future Mary I and Margaret Douglas, the future Countess of Lennox. Frances is best known in history as the wife of Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, the mother of Jane Grey, disputed Queen Regnant of England, Katherine Grey, and Mary Grey. Her claim to the throne was glossed over in the Device for the Succession 1553 by Edward VI, King of England.
