Melinda Morrison and Kelby Schoen enjoy some time working together in the milking parlor on Schoen Farms.
Hello! Welcome to Schoen Farms! I’m excited to introduce our family farm that has been in operation for several generations. Pictured above is Abby Schoen, the next generation in line to farm! You can find us in the beautiful rolling hills of southeast Missouri. We milk 200 Holstein cows and care for another 300 heifers who will become cows after having their first calf. We also produce numerous acres of hay and corn for the cattle to eat, and the remaining fields are filled with grazing heifers.
I wanted to discuss everyone’s individual jobs here, but I feel we all consider ourselves a team rather than individuals. Everyone works together to keep the cattle comfortable and safe. While each person has their area of expertise, everyone is willing to step in where needed. This may mean caring for four -legged two year olds or four year olds with two legs.
The cows’ needs come first - after our own children, of course. The milk cows and small calves are housed in barns for protection from the adverse southeast Missouri weather. Our cows enjoy fans and cool sand beds in the summer when they are not playing in the sprinklers. In the winter our calves snuggle in big, fluffy straw beds while wearing blankets. Every barn also has curtains to pull down to block the cold wind. Every animal also has feed and water readily available to them.
We are a loving, compassionate family that cares about our work at Schoen Farms. Our job lasts 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. With God’s help, we strive to give each animal a happy, healthy, and long life. Please stop in to see us if you’re in the area. We welcome all visitors to experience the fun at Schoen Farms!
