"if a superhero can't save his family, he's not much of a hero,"
Shazam!, released to the general public on the fifth of April, 2019. Let me start by saying yes, I did see it the day it came out. I've been waiting to see this movie since August. Thus, I've been anticipating it for quite a while. Because of this, my views on it might be slightly exaggerated, as this movie was certainly worth the wait.
Shazam follows the story of 14-year-old Billy Batson, a foster kid who is trying desperately to find his birth mother. After running away from his previous 'homes', Billy finds himself dumped, yet again, in the middle of seven people he doesn't know. When he runs away for the last time, he finds himself having superpowers being forced upon him. He aims to find and put a stop to an old man with a collection of sins stored in his eye... And so on.
This movie's plot is basically a lot of clichés put together. An orphan gains superpowers, and has to save pretty much the whole world? Okay, but add in the Seven Deadly Sins, the characters (which I will get to later) and the all-around drama, and this definitely makes it an utterly original story. Is it intriguing? Yes. Is there personal drama? Yes. Is there more than your fair share of action? Yes. Yes, there is. This movie has so much to offer, and a very compelling backstory.
Naturally, the quality is amazing. Special effects are also fantastic, as expected. Props seem very well made, brilliantly done honestly, and backgrounds are very detailed and well put together. Now, the CGI used for the Seven Deadly Sins was incredibly well done. They were portrayed very well. Unfortunately, I am not in the position to provide an image, but believe me when I say that they were fantastically animated and designed.
The character building in the movie was absolutely fantastic. The friendship built between Billy and his new foster brother, Freddy, is very well written and portrayed, and incredibly realistic. Of course, there's your fair share of drama between the two as well (that of which I can't say, guess you'll have to find out yourself). All the other characters are very well written and vary quite a lot, which makes it more interesting, as expected. The backstory the main character's are given definitely contribute to the story, and certainly, get you much more invested in the whole story.
As you could probably already tell, I thought this film was fantastically entertaining. It had comedy, action, drama, literally anything I could ask for. I've been waiting for this film since The Darkest Minds, which came out in August 2018, meaning I've been looking forward to it for months. When the wait was finally over, I really wished I could watch it all over again as though it was anew.
