The Soundscape Design System

The Soundscape Design System, or the SDS, is an audiovisual performance and compositional system, depicting a fictional society where humans have the ability to directly manipulate their personal soundscape. There is a tendency to approach our experience of the soundscape with a sense of collectivism, but there is a wealth of differences created ­­­by perceptual ambiguity, our individual sensitivity to noise and silence, use of personal media technology and health.

Sweet Thing

Sweet Thing is a live performance for voice and electronics, incorporating improvisation and aleatoric composition. The Max patch provides a performance interface for user control of the vocal processing, a sequencer for live recording and playback, and the sampled piano accompaniment. As the performer has full control over the entry and exit of the musical parts, the piece can be of any length.

The accompaniment uses a number of piano samples, individually fixed in pitch and duration. The performer starts a sequence of playback, with options to adjust the speed of entry and exit. The sequencer module allows the performer to record vocal parts to playback during the piece. Each module has effects processing which are included in the interface.

Symphonic Engines

January ‘19 Symphonic Engines explores spectral processing, using sounds recorded around SE London. The sounds were processed using Audioscuplt and arranged in Max MSP.

Loom, Hearing Lines and Squared

October ‘19

Loom, Hearing Lines and Squared are three audiovisual works that collectively take inspiration from the techniques and aesthetics of textile art. The triptych interprets the design, process and physical aspects of cross-stitch, embroidery and weaving in a digital context. Working from the mathematical parallels perceived between these textile forms and computer programming, the audiovisual pieces consider how specific textile techniques may be adapted and applied to sonic and visual content. 

By understanding these techniques in an algorithmic way, the project also aims to highlight how the textile industry motivated advances in technology that influenced the development of the computer.

This Disordered House

January ‘19

This Disordered House endeavours to represent the absorbing, chaotic and introverted experience of an anxiety disorder. Each scene is sewn into the next, forming a chronology of erratic events. As the piece progresses, we witness the irreparable transmutation of the audiovisual subject.

The visuals were programmed using Max Jitter, and the sound in arranged in Garageband.

Chimera

December ‘18

A performance system for video projects and audio file playback, designed to be used in the collaborative piece Chimera. There is no footage of the performance as it was a closed assessment, but I have provided a demo of the patch here. The visuals were projected in the theatre as part of the performance, and the sound played over the PA in tandem with live musicians on stage.

The footage is from the trailer for the documentary The Secret World of Moths.

Uncoupling Movement is an audiovisual composition that explores tight audiovisual synchronisation over a process of gradual phasing.

The visuals were programmed in Adobe Premiere and the sound in Max MSP.

Live Sampling Study

February ‘15

This Max patch implements live sampling tools to play alongside prepared samples to form its composition. It uses the [transport] object to sequence sample playback, using a random sound selection.

Polyphonic Synthesiser

January ‘15 

This Max patch was a small exercise in creating a polyphonic synthesiser. It includes ADSR and noise control, with a bank of 3 oscillators. It has built in recording and playback functionality, and adjustable 2-channel gain control for each oscillator. It takes midi-keyboard input.

On the Deck

November ‘18 

On The Deck is an audiovisual composition that takes inspiration from Sergei Eisenstein’s approach to light, silhouette and texture in his 1925 film Battleship Potemkin, using my interpretation of the potential sonic quality of these visual features.

The visuals were programmed in Adobe Premiere and the soundscape consists of various software instruments and manipulated samples sequenced through GarageBand.

Codifying Minimalism

September ‘16 - June ‘17 

Codifying Minimalism is the result of a 10 month project aiming to investigate how the compositional techniques used in the early works of Minimalist composers (Reich, Glass, Rily and Young) can be interpreted with code. The end result was an audiovisual performance of four individual compositions, accompanied by a 12,000 word report. 

The piece was programmed with Max MSP/ Jitter using a modular approach to the playback, where each composition is loaded one at a time into the main interface using [bpatcher]. 

The report is not hosted online but I can provide copies to interested parties (see contact tab on the left).
