Internet is not a luxury, people.
Anyone who's been on the internet for any amount of time has witnessed the argument (or some variation of):
Well you have internet so you're not that poor.
If you're that poor, sell your computer and cut your internet.
Bootstrap it and eventually you too will be possessed by a disproportional amount of rightgeousness.
Normally, I just mutter under my breath "Oh kindly go fuck yourself" and don't engage, because it's damn hard to convey common sense on the internet without typing up a storm. And well, it's not my job to educate people.
But here's why poor people often prioritize having a computer and internet over other needs:
- They need it to get a job. Last couple months I asked around some employment places for an application, and was directed to their websites. They didn't have any computers in the store to do so. In libraries you usually only get an hour on the internet, but here's the catch - almost all my applications took and hour to conclude. So an unemployed person without internet would have to stay unemployed for quite a while, only being able to apply once a day, assuming computer labs weren't full that day (they quite often are).
- They save money and time on transports. Especially if you don't own car, the 30 dollars you spend on an internet connection can save immense amounts of money. You don't need a two hour trip to the SS office when you can request information through their website (I swear that's how long it took me to go file for my card). Not to mention the bus fares! Just think of all the times you googled or filed something online, and compare that to the monetary inconvenience of going to the agency's actual physical space.
- They're the cheapest entertainment you can get. I often can't afford going out to the movies, but a whole month's worth of movies and series will only set me back 8$ with streaming Netflix, and if I can't afford that, Youtube has tons of free movies. Most network websites stream their own series. Most classic books can be read online for free. Now you might be thinking poor people shouldn't ever get a minute of enjoyment, but these are necessary things for one's mental balance, or they wouldn't be popular and desirable to begin with.
- They can save money on the most random things. I buy things I can't afford otherwise online, because I can find someone selling them second hand, or on a clearance section, or by taking advantage of promotional coupons. Last Christmas I got decent gifts for my family relying entirely on earned amazon giftcards.
- They can make money online. I'm priviledged to have a skill set that allows me to make money by freelance writing while I am unemplyed, but I'm not the only one whose lifeline relies on an internet connection! Many people take small jobs like writing or selling things online if there are no other sources of income, and that keeps them afloat.
- They can stay informed and connected online. VOIP systems are generally cheaper than a landline, and why not, they're already paying for an expensive connection as it is. Emails, and being able to respond promptly to them, is what keeps us connected to family and employment networks. The internet has a wealth of free information that can keep anyone as informed and current as they wish to be, improving job prospects and personal growth.
There are probably a lot more reasons, and I'm not criticizing at all people who don't make staying connected a priority, i just mean to point out that owning a computer while poor is not some irresponsible decision, but rather a good stepping stone to a better situation.
P.S. - If I posted this to you as a rebuttal to your ignorant, classist views, and after reading you're still not getting it, kindly fuck off.
