It was perhaps not his bleached blond hair that made the difference, but Kevin Benavides has changed and has achieved consecration on the Dakar for his fifth participation. After a very noticeable debut on the rally with a finish just at the foot of the podium in 2016, the Argentinean overcame disillusionment, especially in 2018 when the title seemed to be within his grasp until a navigation error proved fatal to his hopes near Salta, his home town. This year once again, a nasty fall broke his nose and damaged his ankle, but could not stop him from taking control of the category on stage five.

Pushed off the leader’s throne the very next day, Kevin was able to bide his time and regained the lead when his team-mate Nacho Cornejo exited the rally prematurely… to win the Dakar, you also need a bit of luck. The first South American winner in the category then withstood the attacks during a very tense finish, in which Sam Sunderland remained a threat until the last few kilometers of the penultimate stage, as did Ricky Brabec, who finished less than five minutes behind him with victory in the final special.

Right at the end, the American ensured the first one-two finish for Honda since Cyril Neveu and Edi Orioli in 1987, making the winged-logo brand’s rally a very good job.

The same can be said of the performance displayed by Lithuanian Arūnas Gelažninkas, who won thanks to a lead of one hour over the previous title holder Emanuel Gyenes in the “Original by Motul” category, for unassisted bikers.

How much des it cost to race the Dakar Rally? In this video a surprising underdog that has sacrificed everything for the opportunity to go back and start 9th to try his hand at becoming the second American to win Dakar: Skyler Howes. Skyler had to sell the rest of his race bikes to make it happen, and at the moment, he does not have a bike to ride when he gets back home.

He was able to link up with the reputable BAS Dakar KTM, where he will finally have access to the resources and tools necessary to be even more successful at Dakar.

Having left Sakaka this morning after an already difficult day for the first part of the marathon stage, which he completed with only one spare wheel, Sébastien Loeb has been forced to drop out of the race. Halted once after 43 km, he ground to a halt again after 83 km following a second puncture, while his assistance truck also encountered mechanical problems. At the end of the day, the Bahrain Raid Xtreme driver was able to repair the problem, but decided to leave the special and head to the bivouac in Neom by road, putting himself at risk of disqualification for not validating the many remaining way points on the special.

On arrival, he informed his team of his decision to withdraw from the rally, which passed the information on to the race officials.

The third stage of Dakar was a success for the crew of the Sedlany Big Shock! Racing team. They reached the finish an excellent 4th place and also hold the 4th position in the overall ranking. The driver Martin Macik, navigator Frantisek Tomasek and mechanic David Svanda did great again in the no. 503 Iveco truck.

The Beast has to work hard in the third stage It was hard work for The Beast in the third stage of the Dakar 2021. And therefor also for Tim and Tom Coronel. In the 403 km loop near Wadi Ad-Dawasir, they were faced with a particularly varied landscape, which demanded the utmost from man and machine. “We moan sometimes, but this is what we are here for,” said Tom. “This is the real thing.”

The first real stage of #Dakar2021 are done. The Dakar Rally is off and running in Saudi Arabia after the first full stage ended at the new bivouac situated in Bisha. Monster Energy Honda Team rider Kevin Benavides finishes second on the day and now lies in second place overall in the general standings trailing Toby Price on the KTM. The 2021 Dakar Rally got off to a tough start with a 623-kilometre stage – including 277 kilometers against the clock – which turned out to be both highly-technical and navigationally complex.

At the car classes Sainz wins, ahead of Peterhansel. Carlos Sainz went on to take victory on day one after a close battle with team-mate Peterhansel. Sainz now tops the overall standings with an eight-second lead over Peterhansel.

Prodrive teamed up with Bahrain, more specifically the country's Mumtalakat sovereign wealth fund, which also owns McLaren, to establish the new subsidiary Prodrive International whose task was to design and manufacture a bespoke off-roader in time for the 2021 Dakar Rally. After releasing the first computer-generated images in June, Prodrive on Thursday finally revealed the new off-roader. It's called the BRX Hunter, and it's been developed for the Dakar Rally's T1 Group premier car category.

For 19 days in November and December 2020 they were out in the deserts and mountains of the UAE with Prodrive, supporting their rigorous testing of men, machine and team as they put the all new, purpose built, BRX Hunter to the test.

We start our annual Paris-Dakar jumbo-mambo at the first of January 2021. Just like the past 15 or so years we report and syndicate from the current event, we are news and media users of several teams incl. KTM, Redbull Media House, Hero Motorsport, x-raid Mini. There are obviously some serious kinks in 2020 with the global Covid-19 pandemic so some procedures will be a little different as they try to create a “bubble” only tested and quarantined team-members have access to. Similar to Formula 1 or MotoGP during the past season.
