Stockholm syndrome, career suicide, hostage situation, whatever - there's something so uniquely heartwarming about Charles renewing with Ferrari.

I don't really care for the corporate bullshit that gets thrown around every time someone renews with a team - what I do care for is the way the red car has woven itself into the fabric of Charles's life, the way he cannot talk about Ferrari without talking about his family, his dad, Jules, his town, the dreams and the heartache and the what ifs.

This feels braver and realer than anything else - because it shows the messiness of it, the fact that you don't always get the perfect setup or a linear progression, and that sometimes the most meaningful things are not the ones happening on a podium.

So no, I don't think it's Stockholm syndrome, career suicide, or a hostage situation. I think Charles is showing that there are many ways to leave a mark as a legend of the sport.

And yes, I hope with all my heart that he will get at least one wdc, but even if he doesn't? His love for this team feels like history itself.

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.
