While Emma knew the time of living in this little bubble they’d created at her place in la could only last so long, she specifically chose to just not think about it. She knew it was stupid, and maybe it was childish. But for the first time in what felt like a really long time, things were easy. There was no stress. She’d been able to fend off her “team” saying she was over worked, needed time to rest and that quite honestly, she was having some issues in her marriage. None of which was technically a lie, but it was enough to give her some time. On the other hand though, she knew at this point she was just straight up lying to her husband. And she did feel terrible, that just wasn’t her. She wasn’t the type to lie – in fact most of the time Emma Stone was very up front. But it was for the best, she’d told herself. It was to try to get through smoothly, so there was a chance feelings wouldn’t be hurt more then they already would be.
But things were winding down, she knew they’d get the call any day, and then finally things could move forward, no matter what the results were. And although she knew Andrew had said he wanted to be with her no matter the results, she couldn’t seem to completely extinguish that little uncertain voice in the back of her head that told her how easy it was to say that now, before she was showing all that much and before there was an actual life involved. She’d been in her head when the bell rang, but she got up when she heard her name. She figured he’d forgotten the money, so she grabbed her purse as she made her way to the door. Upon seeing Dave before them, her already big green eyes seemed to get even bigger. “Dave,” she said in shock. “Hey,” she said with a smile – not sure what at all to expect – “What are you doing here?”
It took Andrew a moment for his mind to process what was happening. Emma’s husband had been the last person he expected to see when opening the front door. A million questions were swirling around like a tornado in his mind. Did the paparazzi leak something about them? Did he catch them out in public in a similar fashion as when they ran into Alyssa? Dave shoved his way past Andrew and stepped inside. As much as Andrew wanted to be the one to speak and possibly ease the situation, he also knew there was nothing he could say to make it less awkward or uncomfortable.
“I got an interesting message on our home phone...you know the one that I have linked up to my cell phone,” Dave began as he pulled his cell phone out of his back pocket. “I thought you’d like to hear it in person.” Andrew could tell that the man’s tone was harsh and had a tinge of hurt to it. The other man’s pain selfishly gave him hope for the news to lean in his favor. After all, he knew next to nothing about this man and really had nothing against him. Besides the fact that he was married to the only woman Andrew would ever be in love with.
Dave pressed play on the voicemail and put his phone on speaker. “Hi Miss Stone, this is Stacy calling from the paternity lab. I didn’t want to give this news over voicemail, but I know you stated it was urgent. I wanted to let you know that the paternity results are in for your baby. It does indeed look to be Mr. Garfield’s child. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to call us back.”
Andrew’s heart skipped a beat in anticipation, not believing his ears at first as the news sank in. He was the father. He was having a baby with Emma. His dream from so many years ago was finally coming true.
