Today on my way to work. Seen a lil young dude no more than 10, with his whole left side of his face swoll up like he been in a fight with a grown man. Prompted me to finish this insignia. Today is the first time i celebrate Father's Day as part of the club. This morning i woke up and looked my lil man in his eyes and saw complete admiration. Cant even pretend that i dont still hold a heated bitter grudge towards my pops not being there. Not like homeboy is dead, not like he is being held captive in some remote 3rd world country. Not like this dude laid in a bed like a vegetable in a coma. He lived his life outside of my presence. And for whatever the reason he stayed away. The only thing i received from him was a vhs, him dancing, singing happy birthday. But it was that old Johnson family version. And i never forgot that bet we made over the phone who will win Superbowl. Way, way, way back. I picked the Steelers and i dont remeber who the losing squad was. But i do believe we bet money. Bruh my pockets waiting for that deposit still. But thats the thing. Thats it. As boys we look at Pops like we look at Batman or Tony Stark. For being black purposes let me switch those out for Luke Cage and T'Chala aka Black Panther. 20 some plus years later I still hold tight onto these memories. As best i can. I will never leave my son wanting and needing to have his Father around. Being a Dad is such a blessing and a privilege. And what can i say, my lil man is a well behaved angel. Smiles the instant he wakes up and that does something. Being the first person he sees you go into mode like "Ha! I got first dibs on today's smiles." Thats 15-20 minutes of pure love and affection. And when i walk away to get ready for work. His eyes follow. This is getting SUPER lenghty so let me leave with this. Man to man, from one father to another. Yo we got our babies watching us. They taking note and learning by our example. We can NOT allow ourselves to fall short. I am far from perfect but i will be damned if i show my son how to be less than what he is capable of. Be a man, a father, a mentor, a pillar, and rival their mother in being the biggest supporter. Instead of taking gifts, take a look at yourself. How can we do better? How can we show better?
