i think thereâs something heartwarming about the fact that when youâre a 12-year-old girl, your idea of âstrong female charactersâ in fiction tends to revolve around women fighting, women living in fantasy universes and wielding fancy swords, women being physically violent; and as you grow up, you start to appreciate the (seemingly) mundane portrayals of female existence: women simply living as women on planet earth, going through earthly events and dealing with their earthly emotions.
itâs so refreshing to see that we are becoming more and more grounded in the richness and the uniqueness of our existence as women. we grow out of the self-imposed idea that we can only be strong and resilient when we are fighting. sure, fantasy universes are cool, but i am struck each day by how nuanced and diverse our experiences are, and how close to home they hit even when - or perhaps especially when - theyâre not relatable or universal. thereâs nothing more empowering than the stories that each of us has to say, regardless of how mundane.
jojo siwa is an icon. her coming out is going to hugely influenced the younger generation of lgbtqia+ community. she is so unapologetically herself and young girls especially are going to feel so inspired

The Female Wank
Grace Campbell
The first time I was turned on
I was eight.
Kim Kardashianâs sex rape.
A girl in my class showed it to me after school.
My vagina get like a hot air balloon.
I ran home so that I could finish the feeling alone.
Iâll never forget it,
Sex with myself for the first time.
A feeling of utter bliss, and then suddenlyâ
I felt ashamed.
Disturbed.
Like I deserved to be locked up.
But I continued to do it. All the time, in secret.
A teddy bear. A pillow. A TV remote.
It was the biggest source of comfort,
And the biggest source of loneliness.
No one had ever told me girls could touch themselves.
Meanwhile, boys were being boys.
Wanking in the toilets at school.
Wanking alongside their friends to the same porn video.
A community of wankers.
Fathers were joking with their sons
about what type of porn they watched
Cuming of age.
Boys were taught to think the female orgasm was as simple
as unlocking an iPhone.
All you need is a light fingerprint, and she will cum.
Send with boys was a misunderstanding.
When it happened, there was no hot-air-balloon feeling.
He thought, put it in there, and sheâll enjoy it.
Every time I do mush as sighed, he thought it was an orgasm.
His pleasure was more important than mine -
My pleasure was locked up on the box of secrets.
I still thought I was a freak.
It wasnât until I was twenty that my friend told me
she did the same.
What I would have done to know that
for all those past twelve years.
All that anguish wasted on nothing.
The next time I had sex,
I put my hand down there.
Showed him how it was done -
Whoever he was.
The sex I had with mysel
Unlocks new levels of sex I have with other people,
Like Candy Crush,
Patriarchy has attempted to write female pleasure
out of our culture.
Patriarchy whatâs is to think our sexual gratification
can only be granted to us by a man.
But life is too short to be having bad sex.
Tell your mates -
Girls Wank Too.
