What conflict would you prefer they have / storyline you prefer for them?
I never felt like a conflict between them needed to be their sole or even primary storyline, but a strain of navigating their relationship in these circumstances would understandably be a thread of it.Ā Ā I just rewatched the scenes in 7x12 and 7x13, and it struck me that they really could have come to the same conclusion without the cheating.Ā Itās similar in that way to season three: when Alex broke up with Piper, it was because of the general way she was acting and treating people.Ā It wasnāt about the cheating, which was never 100% confirmed and didnāt need to be there.Ā You could lift it out without changing things.Ā But cheating letās them save a sex scene (although not in season threeās case, because the chemistry was literally too awful), and is in general a big externalization of conflict that writers throw in when they donāt trust subtlety, or their own ability to write complex internal/emotional conflicts.Ā Ā
Itās completely bonkers to me that Alex basically only interacted with two characters for the majority of the season, despite being in the main setting of the show.Ā Even just going on the material that was already there, I would have rather seen her getting forced into various prison risks and illegalities and deal with wanting to hide that from Piper, but eventually telling her, and them worrying about what that risk means but also Alex doesnāt really have a choice etc.Ā Couple that with Piper trying to get used to the post-prison life, which is hard enough to do when you have a good reason to actually missĀ an aspect of prison life.Ā They could get to that point of Alex worrying sheās holding Piper back and itās not fair (especially if they actually put some emphasis on the fact that sheās having to take risks that could end up expanding her sentence), and to the point that when she gets transferred it feels like itās making things even more impossible.Ā We could easily get there without focusing so hard on the cheating and the teasing threat of cheating.Ā Itās cliche and itās uninteresting and they even seemed to know the cheating was just a symptom rather than the main problemā¦.it was so underdiscussed it really shouldnātĀ have been there at all.Ā Ā Ā
