pretty pics from fusion last night
did zouk last night with an amazing instructor from Vancouver and now I’m really sad that there’s no local zouk community bc ?? that’s so fun and looks amazing and I've only gotten to do it a handful of times
not as cute dance aesthetics: uneven floors, gently stepping on your leads foot, the gentle *whap* when your ponytail whips your lead in the face, standing on surfaces you know are bad for your dance shoes
For sure! :) I love following too. I sort of assumed you were in a particularly gendered/pressure-y scene since you only mentioned dancing with men and not women, but I guess that was just because that was more relevant to my question :P Glad to hear your community is encouraging!! Any more thoughts on gender roles and dance?
i mean I’ve been so incredibly privileged to have my dance experience to take place in such an ambi environment where switching is encouraged and for the most part my last thoughts on it are that dancers who both lead and follow tend to be so much better in their preferred role just because of the attentiveness and understanding of what works which is why I’m so supportive of ambi dancers and I’m looking forward to learning how to lead so I can improve my following and help out at follow heavy events! more or less that’s it but if you have more questions like,, I love talking about dance thank u for indulging me
Sorry if I'm prying, but do you genuinely prefer following, or do you feel a little (or a lot) pressured into exclusively following (or both)? No judgment either way!! It's obviously a valid preference but I also know things can get uncomfortable in certain circumstances. (1/2)
(2/2) I’m a woman who both leads and follows, and I think I faced a lot less pressure to stick to following than most women in partner dancing, and it still felt like a lot (partly because a lot of the pressure I felt was just me assuming other people were judging me even though they probably weren’t)
i really do genuinely enjoy following actually! the dance community that I’m a part of is so beyond encouraging of ambi dancing and switching traditional roles (college town lol) so I don’t feel any pressure to follow (and I’m hopefully gonna start learning to lead soon) like I did initially start following because of gender expectations but genuinely between following and the few times I’ve led I really really prefer following just because of the opportunity to listen and respond and clear my head if that makes sense?
"dance connection and sexuality? gender roles and dance? compulsory heterosexuality and partner dance?" all of the above? :P if that's too much, tell me about compulsory heterosexuality and partner dance!
I’ll just start with that so I don’t end up doing like 20 pages of writing lolokay so like I’m primarily a blues fusion dancer, with Argentine tango being a close second and both of those (although the former much more than the latter) are very sensual dancesmicro blues fusion a lot of the time is danced in close position with temple to temple contact and involves a lot of moves that can be construed as sexual (body rolls etc) and I love love a really strong partner connectionbut like I’m also a lesbian and social partner dance for the most part follows traditional gendered dance standards so a lot of the time I end up having really strong vague emotional connections as well as physical closeness with young, conventionally attractive dudescompulsory heterosexuality being the bitch it is on occasion will end up nagging that that means attraction because I crave that sensual connection with my dance partners, and some more than otherslike I’ve always been very sure in my sexuality and that I’m not attracted to men at all but when I entered the dance community I had to once again peel away layers and layers of weird forced thought until I was able to recognize that I can still feel comfortable having that intimacy because while I may enjoy dancing with men, I don’t enjoy dancing with them because of the fact that they are menand bc of compulsory heterosexuality sometimes I won’t realize what I’m doing can seem flirty which makes me incredible paranoid like one of my favorite fusion leads is an incredibly intimate dancer like if we’re front to front that means our heads our touching and he’s moving my hips and if we’re front to back he’s breathing into my neck and so on and so forth and right now I’m in the process of panicking because I really want to maintain the intimacy of our dance connection without him interpreting that as any other kind of connection or attractionand I’m just now realizing how much I wrote but there you have it that’s my thing abt compulsory heterosexuality and dance
blues pictures from last week
I know y'all are probably sick of me posting pictures but these are too good to pass up
dance aesthetics: gentle movements to set your hands on your leads shoulders, breathing out and settling into each other, gentle laughter when one of you fumbles, soft movements and constant contact as the sun sets
When dancing the Blues, dance close.
Sometimes, dance closer.
