Lochside House Haysom Ward Miller

Haysom Ward Miller’s Lochside House in the West Highlands has been named RIBA House of the Year 2018. The annual accolade is given by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to the UK’s best new architect-designed house. Lochside House was revealed as the winner in the final episode of a special Channel 4 series Grand Designs: House of the Year. The award-winning project was designed as a modest, sustainable home for a ceramic artist on the edge of a Scottish lake.

Peter Zumthor completes Devon countryside villa “in the tradition of Andrea Palladio”

Swiss architect Peter Zumthor has completed his Secular Retreat – a Living Architecture holiday home designed to celebrate the landscape like the villas of his hero, Andrea Palladio. The house, which has been more than 10 years in the making, is Zumthor’s first permanent building in the UK. It is located on a hilltop in South Devon, England, where it commands an impressive view of the surrounding countryside.

Zumthor designed the house to be built from concrete rammed by hand – a technique that gives stripes to the walls, both inside and out. The thickness of this material is revealed by the large, deep window openings, designed to take full advantage of the setting.

Yoki Treehouse by Will Beilharz spans cypress branches in central Texas

This rentable treehouse by designer Will Beilharz perches above a creek in Texas, and connects to a bathhouse via a suspension bridge. Yoki Treehouse rests between the branches of two old cypress trees, 25 feet (seven metres) above a spring-fed creek flowing underneath.Beilharz, founder of sustainable tourism company ArtisTree, created the nature retreat as bookable accommodation for guests.
