Gen X. Science Fiction fan. Nature and animals fan. Science. And musicals. Carrington the movie changed my trajectory in 1995, Multi fandoms (Tolkien, Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Monty Python, Christopher Nolan, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, The Morning Show, Welcome to Nightvale, Wicked, Severance, The Good Place, Good Omens, Twin Peaks, Mission Impossible, MCU, Alien, Grace & Frankie, Ocean Eight…) I ship M/M F/F and F/M couples and poly it depends on the story and characters. Fanfiction is my anchor. When I’m reblogging cute animals from time to time I’m in fact avoiding to reblog some doomscrolling sh@&t and im trying to avoid spiraling into darkness.
Last night I watched the mini serie by Josée Dayan Les Liaisons dangereuses with Rupert Everett, Catherine Deneuve, Nastassja Kinski… I loved this version. But RE was right sixties fashion is not very flattering. His Valmont is incandescent. There is one thing I can’t forgive: the horse. I can’t say more. But what a shame.
I just started Hello Darling! By Rupert Everett and it’s very funny and well done. Sadly I received a translated edition. I work in publishing and I’m a translator but I hate having to read translations when it’s for me. Oh well I will buy another one in English.
Insomnia lately I suppose lack of daylight and exercise because of heatwave and stress because of work and heatwave. It’s been years and I’m rediscovering checking everything I do twice and being in a mental haze. Not being able to understand what I’m reading. And being depressed. When I was young I could go night after night before reaching that state. Now one insomnia and I can’t function properly. OR I couldn’t function properly for years and didn’t realize that.
Benedict Cumberbatch is having his 50th birthday today and there are barely any posts about it. Omg people we used to be a proper country. Shame on all of you.
I’ve grown up in an age that told me that denying yourself was good. Oh, you want cake? Here, have this chalk-dust square of not-cake - fewer calories, don’t you know! You want to lay on the sofa and read? Don’t you think you ought to clean the entire house first? Then perhaps you’ll deserve ten minutes. Make sure it’s approved book though - no reading purely for pleasure!
And most importantly - you must work hard to maintain yourself and your life in a certain way or no one will love you!
You know, the sort of thing S1 Gabriel said.
And then there’s Aziraphale who loves food and books and peace and his comfy clothes and his music and he is deeply loved by his demon who wants him to love all that. Aziraphale just wants a soft, sweet, delicious life - not a soldier or a leader, to just be him.
And Crowley loved that about him.
I just think that was very important about S1 Aziraphale (and not something that made much of after that) and it felt like I was being given permission to enjoy my life and I would still be able to be loved and to achieve things, even if I’d rather eat cake.
I think S2 and S3 forgot that about Aziraphale but I think that soft hedonism is a hugely important part of his character
watch movies that make you uncomfortable read books that make you uncomfortable go to plays that make you uncomfortable watch tv that makes you uncomfortable look at paintings and sculpture and artwork that makes you uncomfortable. it is spiritually and morally and ethically and artistically really really good for you. think about why you are uncomfortable. what biases do you bring to art? what biases does the art bring to you? how do you reconcile this? how does your worldview grow and expand and change? all this and more will be answered and available to you if you just engage with art that does not coddle you and treats you like an intelligent human being that can sit through discomfort
"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.
I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.
Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.
So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.
Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.
Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵💫
Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.
Anyways, if you want to print the wheel guards yourself, you can get the model here or here.
I also made a quiet version you can stick furniture felt pads on.
