TAYLOR SWIFT Fortnight Music Video Teaser (2024)
This song has so many possible meanings. Is TS running away from a relationship or her partner? Is about her or someone hiding away?
"And I wanted to show you something tonight because we've got an alternate cover to 'The Tortured Poets Department' that nobody has seen."
it’s now time for a long overdue discussion of how the ends of ‘mastermind’ and ‘you’re losing me’ mirror each other and portray the changing nature of a relationship from stable to in crisis (in my own little opinion, of course).
earlier songs in midnights lay the groundwork for this. both lavender haze and sweet nothing held paint a picture of the couple as individuals, while also introducing the external threats to their relationship.
lavender haze is written in the first person establishing a vocal narrator (taylor) juxtaposed with her lover who “[doesn’t] ever say too much”. there are also references to external gossip and rumors being harmful to the internal relationship.
sweet nothing brings the focus back to the gossiping outside voices from ‘lavender haze’ with the narrator’s lover still not saying much, instead opting to hum. however, they do have the spoken line “what a mind”
mastermind closes out midnights and full dialogue between the couple is finally fleshed out and explored. it can almost be read like a script:
Person A (embarrassed and anxious): none of it was accidental and the first night that you saw me nothing was gonna stop me. I laid the groundwork and then...
[Person A trails off as Person B looks at them with a knowing smirk]
Person A: (with a mix of awe and bewilderment): you knew the entire time? you knew that I’m a mastermind?
Person B: and now you’re mine
Person A: all you did was smile...
Person B: ‘cause I’m a mastermind
the song’s core message is that taylor thought she was, in a sense, being underhanded in ‘tricking’ her partner to fall for her, only to find out they knew the game she was playing the entire time.
framing her partner as the true mastermind of the situation makes for a more interesting interpretation of the song. taylor’s partner recognized and indulged her need for control while still getting what they wanted.
this person loves taylor for who she is and wanted to be with her from the start, no gimmicks or schemes necessary.
this sort of non-obvious dialogue is employed in the song ‘you’re losing me’ to explain a lack of communication causing the breakdown of a relationship.
the song actually opens with a verbal exchange:
“i don’t understand.”// “i know you don’t.”
the outside voices are also once again present as they all say “you don’t know what you got until it’s gone”
additionally, the repeat of “stop, you’re losing me” in the chorus could also be intended as a line of dialogue. the heartbeat in the background of the song and allusions to sickness and death could make this line a reference to how doctors say “we’re losing them!” when a patient is starting to flatline. but it’s also a line frequently said in an argument.
as taylor, the more vocal party, word vomits her frustrations, all her less vocal lover can do is make a ‘T’ with their hands and say, “stop, you’re losing me.”
like mastermind, the ending of the song is a dialogue with little repeats after each line that could be considered responses:
Person A: do something babe, say something
Person B: say something?
Person A: lose something, babe, risk something
Person B: you’re losing me...
Person A: choose something, babe, i got nothing
Person B: i got nothing
but while mastermind reflects how well-suited the pair are with an almost instinctual understanding of each other, you’re losing me juxtoposes mastermind’s final exchange with its own to show the changing nature of the relationship and the necessity of its end.

By the way, You’re Losing Me further proves that everything we needed to know was already there on Lover. The fear she had of losing him from Cornelia Street and MAATHP, the blind faith in the future from False God (we thought a cure would come through in time), the fact that she was willing to stick with him even if it made her sad from Paper Rings (I gave you my endless empathy / and all I did was bleed), the awareness that nobody could ever leave her and nobody could ever stay (I’m the best thing at this party / I wouldn’t marry myself either), the dichotomy between light and darkness from Daylight (remember looking at this room, we loved it ‘cause of the light / now I just sit in the dark and wonder if it’s time), the discourse about marriage and locking it down from Lover, Paper Rings and ITHK… it’s all there already in Lover. Lover is THE blueprint.
