“The world would not know how to appreciate him; it does not understand his peculiar brand of wit.”
— Franz Kafka, from The Complete Stories (via whyallcaps)
mcsister:
Shaking her head and rolling her eyes at her husband, the whole exchange reminded her of the time when they’d just met and were constantly purposefully trying to push the others’ buttons wanting to see who would break first. He won a lot of the time, but she had won her fair share too and times like this in their marriage reminded her of how they gravitated together all those years ago, despite being polar opposites. 5 years being married and two kids later they were still the same in terms of how they were drawn to each other, and Lizzie was just as in love with him as she was the day that she’d finally admitted it to him. “Fffrever” Ava copied her parents in her adorable toddler gibberish as she looked so seriously into Daniel’s eyes and planted a kiddie kiss right on his lips. “See I didn’t even have to seal the deal just then, Ava did it for me.” Lizzie said, laughing at her two year old’s actions. “What time does your shift end today? Wanna go out for dinner with the girls tonight to celebrate us surviving our first Seattle Grace Mercy West day?” she asked, leaning her head on Ava’s with both of their eyes staring right into Daniel’s.
Daniel’s heart was mush when his daughter kissed him, he barely even registered that his wife was talking to him once again. “I -- no, I can’t, I’ve got so much paperwork I need to do.” While he was the biggest family man going, he was also completely dedicated to his work and wouldn’t leave anything not done. “We’ll have to take a rain check, I probably won’t get out of here until at least 11, so maybe we could get takeout, just me and you. Little date night.” He shrugged a little and leaned over to kiss his wife. “Sorry, beautiful.”
kathleenshepherd-md:
“I’m trying to decide what’s funnier, the fact that you think Lizzie isn’t a pushover or that you think there’s anything she has that I could possibly be jealous of. You’re right about the asshole part though. You just don’t like that I’m a bigger one than you.” Oh good, it was Daniel’s turn with the brain cell today, which made her life significantly easier. She really didn’t want to argued with her brother-in-law in order to advocate for her patient, but she would. “Oh Daniel, wrong again. I am always right, been proven time and time again, and my family…well you don’t get to breeze in, marry my sister and tell me how good my family is to me after an entire life of being the odd Shepherd out.”
“No one’s a bigger asshole than me, Kathleen. Especially not you. You’re weak.” He could feel his internal temperature rising as she spoke and tried to calm himself down by counting to ten in his head. “Oh, boohoo, you’re the odd one out. Suck it up. This pity party is embarrassing. You need to stop acting like a child and grow up, and don’t you dare disrespect my wife again.”
danielshepherd:
“If it gets too much for you, I will speak to her. Even if I have to do it behind your back. I will not have anyone disrespecting my wife, sister or not.” He was deadly serious too, he couldn’t imagine what it was like for her. He only had a brother and he hadn’t seen him for at least 10 years so he didn’t know what it was like to have siblings around, especially not ones that didn’t particularly want to be around you. “I love that too, nothing beats breaking them out just for a quick cuddle and to make me feel as if I’m not the biggest asshole in the hospital. They’ll never see that side of me.” He wrapped his arm round his wife once again and breathed her scent in. He knew that he was a completely different person around her and the kids but he would never show himself as vulnerable to the people he worked with, they would walk all over him and probably screw him over.
“She’s been like this since we were kids. I’m okay, I promise, It’s nothing compared to what Amelia has to deal with, with Kathleen around.” she said, smiling at how protective Daniel could be of her and their girls. He really was the sweetest guy, but he was selective of who got to see him this way which meant that it made Lizzie feel even more special. “I don’t know… something about me just annoys her I guess, and she thinks I’m too easy on Amelia.. but she’s my baby sister and I just think about Ava and Quinn when I see her, I think about how I would want someone to treat them if they were struggling like Amy is..” she got sad just thinking about it, and couldn’t help but look down, leaning on her husband for support as their daughter cuddled into her like she could tell that her mom was upset. Nodding, Lizzie knew about how tough Daniel could seem to coworkers, and she respected that if that was how he wanted to act, because at home he was nothing but the sweet and loving husband and father that he reserved for her and the girls. He was a good doctor, and she trusted his judgement at work and at home with the kids. “I love you, you know that?” she asked, smiling up at him as she cuddled up to him. “hey, if it means that people are too intimidated to flirt with you at work, I’m all about it.” she teased, shaking her head. “Don’t think I didn’t see how those trauma nurses were staring at you batting their eyelashes,” she said, smirking at him and giving his cheek a kiss just to seal the deal, with Ava copying her mommy and kissing her daddy’s cheek on the same spot after.
mcsister:
“Maybe not, but I think Amelia and I are her favorite targets.” she said, sighing. “I don’t want to let it ruin my whole day, she’s gone to look for someone else.. Derek, I think. So I hope that means the rest of my day is clear.” she said, chuckling slightly and shaking her head. “Besides, I’m in a good mood now because I got to see you. I don’t have any other surgeries scheduled for the day so I’m gonna keep Ava with me in my office, and probably pick up Quinn early too.” she said, figuring out her schedule with her husband as she bounced their happy baby on her lap. She couldn’t help but laugh, smiling at Daniel, he always knew how to make her feel better. “Deal, but good luck dealing with that because if they’re anything like me they’ll be experts at sneaking out of the house to go to parties and meet guys. I was a nightmare, gotta hand it to my mom for handling me so well.” she said, shrugging before her jaw dropped at his next statement. “Did your daddy just go there, Ava?” she asked her daughter, continuing to tease her husband as she talked to her daughter instead of him. “A younger model… unbelievable.” she said in fake annoyance as she took her hand and squished Daniel’s cheeks to make him look at her. “You, Daniel Shepherd are all mine, forever. Hate to break it to you, but you’re stuck with me and I have no problem taking down any other woman who tries to steal you away.”
Daniel grinned at his wife and gave her a playful wink, he couldn’t even begin to imagine his life without her in it and he knew that she felt exactly the same way. They were perfect for each other, perfect opposites. She was the nicest person he’d ever met and he was a complete and utter jerk. When the pair first met, Daniel was fresh out of a five year relationship and he was incredibly bitter about the break up. He would go out of his way to upset and irritate people, but Lizzie was different, she didn’t put up with it and chipped away at his hard exterior until she got through. He was grateful for her persistence, he wouldn’t have this life now if it weren’t for her. His walls, which usually stood tall, came down around her and he didn’t even recognise himself a lot of the time. “Forever.” Daniel repeated, he truly meant it.

“Something about everyone annoys her though, let’s be honest, she’s just not really a people person. I wouldn’t take it too personally, my love.” Daniel knew that he was probably being harsh about his sister in law, but he was right and she was always harsh about everyone else. Daniel sympathised with his wife about her sister, it must’ve been hard to see someone you love going through stuff like Amelia had been doing. “She’ll be fine and we won’t let the girls go through anything like Amelia -- they’re not allowed out until they’re at least thirty five anyway.” He would always try and put a smile on Lizzie’s face and would do it by any means possible. He placed a gentle kiss on the top of her head and took her hand in his. “I love you too, babe.” He laughed at her next statement, she knew full well that people were too scared of him to flirt with him. “Maybe I should get one of their numbers -- trade you in for a younger model.” Daniel let out a throaty laugh to show that he was just messing with her.
drcharlottexking:
“No, we have to make sure we go through the right procedures.”
Daniel shook his head. “If the procedures aren’t in the best interest of the patient then I don’t need to follow them.”
addiemontgcmery:
“how about we both take a step back and look at it again? because your way isn’t going to work and how about you don’t forget who’s patient we’re talking about here.”
Daniel sighed, he knew deep down that she was right. “A step back, right.” He scanned his eyes over the patients chart for what seemed to be the hundredth time, it just seemed to confirm that he was correct. “My way would absolutely work, I’ve been doing this long enough to know what’s going to work and what isn’t going to work. You take that baby out now and you’re risking both of their lives.”
kathleenshepherd-md:
“I don’t know if living with my sister has somehow warped your brain, but we’re not all massive pushovers. I don’t do orders. Now that he’s in post-op and been stabilised your patient needs to go to psyche Daniel. Believe me I wouldn’t exactly cry myself a river with grief if he stabbed you with your own pen, but the amount of paperwork I’d have to do would bore me to literal tears.”
“If you’re implying that your sister is a pushover, you’re wrong, she’s anything but. You’re just an asshole and you’re clearly jealous of her for one reason or another.” He huffed a little. “Fine, you can have it your way this time. You’re not always right, you know? And not everyone is out to get you, especially not your sister.”
mcsister:
There was nothing better than seeing how much love Daniel had for their girls, and seeing him with Ava melted Lizzie’s heart as she approached them with the ice cream. He really was the kind of dad that she’d hoped for, for her kids. And even if the girls were a surprise, as well as the fact that they were twins, Daniel had supported her and made her feel every ounce of his love through pregnancy and as they raised the sweet little girls that Ava and Quinn turned out to be. She felt lucky and she wouldn’t change any part of Daniel, they were both stubborn characters and she always just thought back to when they’d just met and were at each other’s throats most of the time, they got through it when she understood that he was just passionate about the work he was doing, and it turned out to be one of the things she loved most about him. She was proud of him. Smiling softly at him and continuing to feed their three year old, Lizzie rested her head on his shoulder, “No, you don’t have to. I can handle my life-long bully.” she said shaking her head because she knew how explosive it would become if Kate and Daniel ended up getting into an argument, “I’m okay, I promise. I just usually have some time to mentally prepare for her and now that we all live here, she can just pop up wherever and whenever like those annoying gophers that you hit with a mallet in that arcade game..” she said, sighing into her own ice cream. “You know what I do love about this place though? I get to break one of these cute munchkins out of daycare whenever I need to recover from the Kathleen Shepherd experience,” she said, picking up Ava and letting her sit on her lap. “That, and my hot husband is just an elevator ride away. That part is good too,”
“If it gets too much for you, I will speak to her. Even if I have to do it behind your back. I will not have anyone disrespecting my wife, sister or not.” He was deadly serious too, he couldn’t imagine what it was like for her. mcsister:
“Oh please, they’ve loved you before they were even born. Your voice was the only one that could stop them from kicking me all hours of the night,” she said, shaking her head because that was when she knew she was done for. It was obvious how much the girls loved their daddy, and even looking at the way Ava was completely heart eyes over him as they walked to the cafeteria was proof of that. Smiling as soon as she was in his arms, Lizzie leaned on his free shoulder as they walked in, and she let Daniel and Ava find a table so she could get them all ice cream. When she got back, she had three cups of ice cream and started feeding Ava by the spoonful, seeing her three year old’s complete joy. “Babe, it’s Kathleen.” she said, giving him a look to show him how miserable the whole exchange was. “She just– it’s really the same conversation we always have. That I’m conspiring against her because I didn’t call before we moved here, I enable Amelia apparently by not being hard on her like Kathleen is, the hospital is apparently a shrine to Derek and I shouldn’t mess up because then people will really think he’s the best one of us– just normal Kathleen stuff,” she said, being honest with her husband about what she and her sister had talked about. “She’s just really… Kathleen. I don’t know how else to describe it, but you know what I mean right?” If anyone could understand Lizzie it was Daniel, and she appreciated that he was letting her rant.
Daniel knew that it was true, he was completely the apple of his kids eyes and nothing would change that, because he’d never show them the side of him that a lot of other people saw. Daniel sat with Ava as Lizzie went for their ice cream. He sat her beside him but held his arm around her as she sat to stop her from falling backwards. When Lizzie returned, he looked up at her with a sweet smile and reached out and rubbed her knee reassuringly as she spoke about her sister. He listened with his full attention on his wife and nodded every now and again to show that he really was listening. He let her finish up and nodded. He knew exactly what Kathleen was like so sympathised whole-heartedly with his wife. “Sometimes, you just have to let it roll off your back, you know that you can’t talk any sense into the girl. I can talk to her if you want me to?” Daniel knew himself that it would be a terrible idea as his short temper wouldn’t go very well with Kathleen’s bad attitude but he’d do anything for his family.
what do you like most and least about seattle?
The thing I like the most is that we live practically next door to a 24 hour gym and the thing I would say I dislike the most is Mark Sloan.
