“Oh my goodness I’m so sorry. I swear that wasn’t what I was trying to do.”
“Uh- it’s fine, I’ve actually gotten good at getting coffee out of clothes at this point.”
“Yeah, no, I know for a fact that a good majority of them don’t. Maybe she will, but I won’t. Call me mad, but I love my kid and don’t want to lose her.”
“She’s your daughter, she’ll probably be the odd ball out of that statistic. And don’t worry, I was calling you mad long before you were talking about your daughter.”
“Honestly, I have no idea how I let you talk me into this.”
“ I don’t know either. I really didn’t think you’d go for it.”
“You know, I considered that for a second, but then I thought that a teenage girl might actually need her mother around– so I don’t think I should just disappear from her life. She already yells that she hates me… don’t need her to mean it literally.”
“Nah, people with mysteriously missing mothers turn out fine all the time- probably. She’s a teenage girl, she’ll get over it.”
“Anyone want to fill me in what I missed for the past couple of days – or no?”
“Looks like we’re both out of the loop. Feel free to let me know when you find out.”
“I’m pretty sure when– or if– we return to our normal bodies, I’m going to have a mug waiting for me on the kitchen table that says ‘world’s worst mom’. This is the third video chat I’ve ignored in two days and I’m running out of excuses.”
“Yikes. I thought it would be hard to explain my absence to just my friends, but explaining that to your daughter, damn. You might not want to go back.”
“You looked like you were in distress…” Jax adjusted his body weight awkwardly. “We could still go swimming?”
“Uh sure, as long as you can swim so I don’t have to valiantly try to save you,” she joked awkwardly.
“Thank you, voice of reason. For you? I’ve got plenty. A whole bottle, actually, so help yourself.”
“Thank god, that’s just what I need after this week. The problem with being twenty again is it makes it harder to get booze.”
“Told you.” Autumn smiled proudly, pushing the plate towards the girl some more. “Here, have it all. I have more.”
Dan laughed as she looked at the plate of food being thrust at her. “Whoa A, I’m not that hungry, but thanks. I can’t be your guardian if I’m too full to get off the couch.”
“— too early for drinking? Is that a thing? It’s five ‘o’ clock somewhere, so everyone can take the judgement and shove it up their ass with the stick they have up there.”
“Babe it’s never too early for drinking. You got any for me?”
“I’m going to get you— just hold on.”
“I can swim you know, you don’t have to valiantly take your shirt off and try to save me.”
“I’m totally okay with that.” Josie laughed, rolling onto her side so she was facing her old friend. “Bitch, you better get those nasty ass boots out of his bed right now.” She narrowed her eyes playfully at the woman, but was serious about getting the shoes out of her bed. “It may have been over ten years but I know you remember no shoes in my damn bed.”
Dan groaned as she flipped the covers off of her to reach down and untie her boots. “You really don’t have any leniency for an old friend who’s tired as hell and has a jigsaw puzzle for boots?” She flipped Josie off as she finally got the first boot off. “ When you’re tired and in need, guess I’m not gonna be the one to help you.”
“No, don’t be hesitant. It might be made on a hot plate but I promise you… it’s delicious. And not ramen so how could it be bad?”
“You got me there. I don’t think I’ve eaten anything without ramen since I’ve come back,” she joked as she reached and took a bite of the food. “Wow, okay, you’re right, it is good.”
“That’s fine.” Josie said as she scooted over to one side of the bed and pulled back the blankets so Dani could crawl in. “As long as you remember I’m a snuggler and I don’t wear pants in bed we are good to go.”
Dani laughed at Josie while moving to the other side of the bed. “As long as I’m the big spoon, we’ll be good.” She gave a half-hearted attempt to take her boots off, and then decided she was too tired to make a real effort and pulled the covers over herself and her friend.
“What?” Autumn asked, eyebrows raised as she held a plate of food out. “C’mon, try it. It’s an old family recipe. It’s really good… just trust me.”
Dan raised her eyebrows at the food being offered. “Forgive me if I’m a little hesitant of any food made in dorm rooms,” she laughed as she sniffed the plate in front of her.
