‘I didn’t know him very well until I signed for Chelsea, but almost immediately there was a synergy between us. We had grown up playing in the same league in east London, and there is a mental fortitude about John which I know is one of my own strenghts. We also share the hunger to win, a determination to succeed, and the motivation to play whenever possible. When Mourinho arrived he assessed the character of John and myself and decided we were the perfect combination to lead the team and represent the club. We have grown as individuals since being awarded that responsability, but we have also become closer as friends. That’s why I feel so comfortable around him both on and off the pitch. There’s no one in the world I’d rather have in my defence than John.’
