Instinct

In February Dutch soccer hooligans damages an Bernini fountain in Rome, leaving it covered in empty bottles and trash. Why would these people be so ignorant and neglecting to see the consequences of their actions? While reading more about hooliganculture, it’s fascinating to find out that the riots are not as unorganized and cheotic as they seem. Agreements are made between supporters and only other hooligans are involved in the fights. Normal citizens or other soccer supporting crowd are not being dragged in the violence. In this illustration I’ve combined the hooligans with an old Roman statue, in which violence and fighting spirit is glorified. Both worlds seem very far apart on the one hand but on the other hand the hooligan culture and the classical culture don’t seem so far apart from each other when it comes to violence.

Ho - ho - ho ! It might be a bit early, thinking about Christmas already.. But it's best to be prepared, because I'm normally always too late with this kind of stuff. I was sick of all the happy Santas, cute snowmen and little elves. In my option it is time for a Christmas card that depicts what Christmas is really about: getting frustrated, for instance by the Christmas lights. (and for me personally trying to send all the Christmas cards to my friends on time is a bit of a stressful thing as well)

Today I had to do a presentation in English, which was a new experience to me. It all went well and the only remark I got was that I shouldn't curse in front of the whole class. I my defense, it is very annoying when you can't think of the English version of some expression. Anyway, I wanted to practice my typography skills and was inspired by translations of Dutch sayings gone bad. 

So 'all craziness on a stick' means something like: let's do normal, that's crazy enough.

Okay, so reality is starting to kick in: the holiday is over. Here's one of the last summer doodles I made. I really loved documenting my activities this way, and I hope you guys will do that as well. This one is from Noorderzon, where we saw an unusual performance by the Orwells.  As soon as I get my moleskin back from the exhibition in Bulgaria, I'll put some new drawings online!

We Dutch people like to joke about German people always digging holes in the beach. I don't exactly know why.. but it is a funny thing to observe people digging on the beach and especially when the whole family is 'digging in', pardon the pun.
