There was something about the backdrop of the night that seemed to give Damon perspective or rather often the lack of it. Without the shallowness of day time to distract him, he was left with only the dark corners of his mind as he flicked through the events of his time at the carnival. It seemed like it should have been a no brainer to leave him behind with the non members of the Guard, their trust in him had obviously been so misplaced. How could they be so fucking stupid to think something like a Carnival would be a piece of cake. Although he seemed better than he had before he broke up with Kris, he was starting to realise that the lack of holes in the wall didn’t mean he was better…and he didn’t know what to do with that information.

It felt wrong to stay in a place that so clearly didn’t want him– hell, it felt wrong to stay with the Guard too, but it wasn’t like had too many other options especially since he realised that he wasn’t as better as he thought he was. He was still the same lump of shit he had always been and he was a moron to ever think he was more than that. Stupid, stupid, fucking stupid.

The night air was fresh as he walked himself around the city as he tried to remember where Darian was staying, his steps seemed to echo off the tall buildings with heaviness. He had to leave, he had to go back to Nearcey where he knew the familiar place would clam his nerves and his guilty conscious. Hell, he a place where if he fucked up, the worst thing that could happen was he got punched in the face and not strangled and thrown in a dumpster. No, he had to fucking leave, he had to get out, he had to talk to Darian about what happened. How could they even let a fucking monster of its leash? He knew he shouldn’t be so mad but he didn’t know how else to be.

“DARIAN. DARIAN, YOU THERE.” Damon yelled as he hit his fists on the door to the man’s temporary home. “DARIAN, I NEED to TALK to you. DARIAN.”

The voice startled Darian who seemed to be lost in his own thoughts. He recognized the voice, as well as the fact that no one else would be slamming his fists on the door. He wondered what Damon wanted and assumed that he just needed to talk. He put one foot in front of the other as he went to the door and opened it up to reveal that his guess was in fact correct. A smile plastered across his face as he looked at Damon.

“Damon, my friend. Come in.” He moved his arm in his direction as he spoke. “Is everything okay?” He asked concerned. He knew that Damon had a lot of trouble with some of the other members of the Guard, but Darian knew that there was more to him than what meets the eye.

“Please, make yourself comfortable.” He added as he escorted him to the main living area, hoping that this was enough privacy for them. He was glad that Damon found out where he was staying and more than happy to hear what Damon had to say. The older man always liked helping those in the Guard as much as he could.

Matthew took the moment to look around, really taking in all the silvers and their smiles. He wasn’t sure if Darian was right or if he’d had too much cotton candy and his brain had turned into a fluffy sugar cloud. “I guess you’re right…” he said slowly, eyes shifting back to Darian. “I’d rather have a world where I know Garnet than not.” The words came out rushed rather than his first few words, a blush in his cheeks. Matthew was almost positive that Darian knew that he had feelings for Garnet considering hiding them wasn’t his best ability.

Darian considered the Guard his family. He always looked after them as if they were. While he wished they had more of a surplus of supplies, he wouldn’t change it for the world. “I know it’s weird to think about, but there’s a reason for everything. I believe that how we are, how we’re living has a lot more good to it than bad.” He smiled when Matthew spoke about Garnet. He liked Matthew around Garnet, much more so than Brooks. “I’d rather have that world too. She is pretty amazing.”

Her lips remained twisted slightly upwards. It was a teasing smile; one that threaten to be one but never really did. But her eyes, those dark eyes, no longer held the usual malice or harshness they usually did. Adrianna could argue with him all she wanted, but she was sure that it was people like him and Aurora that this world needed. The thought of the silvers did make her jaw clench. The brunette did not really understand what was the purpose of being there. There was no set mission, and having fun sounded wrong. But she guess that having fun with someone she actually liked and was not a silver would bring her no harm.

“Please, old man, I could beat you with my eyes close,” she cockily retorted, the small smile turning into something more challenging. Maybe Darian did know her too well. Enough to know that she never turned down a challenge. With those words, she turned and headed for their destination. “If I win…– you’re buying me some of that pink, fluffy candy.” She referred to the cotton candy she had been eyeing since they had arrived. “Also, you think too highly of yourself. It’s going to take more than some little game to get me distracted from the fact that we are surrounded by silver bitches.”

“With your eyes closed, eh? We’ll just have to see about that.” He was trying to encourage her rather than provoke the younger girl. But if it meant her having some fun, he was willing to do anything. “You have yourself a deal. It’ll be all yours if you win, my treat.” While he didn’t have a lot of money, he knew that it would all be worth it to watch her maybe naturally smile in the moment.

“It’s not like I’m meaning to think like that, I promise. I just want to have some fun with you. You deserve to have some fun.” He replied with a nod. “I get why you’re iffy and if anything I’ll always have your back but let’s enjoy ourselves for the time being.” He spoke softly so that her ears would be the only ones to hear him. “It’s not every day that we get to do this or that there’s some candy that you want if you win.”

There’d been a black cloud following Grey around since he found out. He’d never had family growing up, it’d always been just him and Ian and there was never any sort of affection between the father and son. Lake was the first person that he’d cared for beyond what was simply required; she was f a m i l y, and when she married Flynn and had Gabe, they’d become his family too. Now he’d lost one of the THREE people he cared the most for, and the entire reason Aurora had even allowed the Guard to attend this event would result in him only losing another. Grey glanced over at the bearded man who looked even more out of place in a sea of silvers than himself. He appreciated Darian telling him of Gabe’s death, giving him the opportunity to MOURN properly before he saw Lake, but as was customary in Grey’s book he now OWED the lieutenant. Darian’s attention turned his attention towards the man who was speaking. His voice was becoming a bit more familiar to the older man. Arguably, telling Greyson about the fate of Gabe was one of the hardest things he had ever had to do. His arms were crossed as he looked out in the direction of most of the games. To those who didn’t know him, he looked rather stiff and unkind though he was anything but. He nodded at Grey’s question before he continued. Real fun? Darian had no idea what that meant. Was there a way of having fake fun?

“Real fun? Like going around to all the different booths?” He asked as he plastered a smile across his face. “I’m not sure where you’re going with this, man, but I’m in for some real fun. It’ll be good to have some real fun and all.”

Matthew looked at the bear and then looked around them–slowly. His eyes took in everything from the clothes to the food and even the pets that some of the Silvers had. There was so much. “Darian…,” Matthew started, his voice low for only Darian. “why couldn’t we have this?”

It was a simple yet complex question. Why couldn’t they have this? “We do.” Darian replied lowly. “You see all of these Silvers are missing something, and not in a good way. Having everything means that you also have nothing.” He paused as he looked around. The Reds deserved everything the Silvers had but life wasn’t fair. “Everything happens for a reason. If we had all of this, who knows if we would’ve ever come across each other or if you would have ever known Garnet?” Or if Darian would have ever had Garnet in his life. There would always be a bunch of What Ifs that the older man didn’t want to think about.

If he was at any other place, he would walk without his cane. But if it wasn’t for: a) the stupidity of walking around so confidently without his cane when he needed some sort of upper hand in the future, and the less people realized how well he could navigate without his cane the better, b) there were way too many people milling about, and so actually trying to navigate through the mess despite his progress without hurting himself was almost, almost impossible, and c) people loved to avoid the blind man anyways, which meant when they noticed his cane they gave him a wide berth and that was damn nice right now, there would be little point in doing such an action so early in the game.

( a game of which he developed in his own mind, yes, but one he was sure existed between him and her )

Yet, despite himself, he forgot the ever present part d) to this, of which contributed next to nothing except the fact that some people didn’t notice a cane in their paths and tripped over it in such exuberant fashions he wondered why Gerard called him a drama queen.

And, of course, because this was the life he led, somebody tripped over his cane. Whatever reaction they had he cared naught, for he felt the strap of his cane burn his wrist as it slid over his hand, and the thud of weight on the ground, with the clink of it being kicked away, was the most concerning ( because there was a damn lead weight in that cane and if someone noticed, that would cause p r o b l e m s ).

“Would someone please get my cane?” he called out, trying to keep his tone even as he stopped in place, head turning in the direction he thought his cane bounced off to.

Minding his own business was something that Darian was not skilled at. He was always a rather curious man, and often stuck himself in the middle of situations to help mediate the situation. He just liked helping people, it was quite a calling of his.

Darian’s attention turned towards a loud voice once he began to speak, and watched his head turn towards a specific direction. Darian approached the man, and as he got closer, he realized that he was a silver. The paler skin was always something that Darian would never get used to. He asked nicely and Darian would never deny someone of their cane. He bent down and grabbed his cane, waiting for people around him to stop stepping over it so that he could bring it up to a little more than waist level for the man. Finally able to lift it up, he quickly brought it up so that it was standing back up. It was a little more heavy than he would’ve thought but he didn’t think all too much into it.

“Here I have it.” Darian said as he tried to lean it on the man’s lower stomach, holding it up so that he knew where he could find it without having to make any direct contact with the unknown man. “Sorry it took so long to give back, there’s a lot of people around.” He explained, looking at the crowd that surrounded them. “How did you drop your cane?” He asked carefully.

It was impossible not to smile around Darian. There were just those people who were always able to make others smile and Matthew thought Darian was one of those people. Matthew found himself missing his own father sometimes, the longing for his parents always something that followed him around. “Then I’m going to go with a little bear! I might get a hug when I give it to her,” Matthew said as he laughed and turned to pick out a bear. When it was handed to him, he smiled down at the bear, running his fingers over the soft fur. “How are you doing Darian? Having fun?”

“A bear and a hug, sounds like the perfect combination.” Darian replied with a smile. Darian watched as he picked out a bear proudly, his eyes studying the bear before looking back up at the younger man. “I’m doing good, thank you for asking. I’m just trying to soak up the atmosphere while I can. It’s pretty special, y’know?” Darian hoped that Matthew knew what he meant.

It was rare that Aurora could be found anywhere without Darian at her side, and this was no exception. Heading into Archeon was risky and dangerous business, even with the assurances of the King. The only reason she was allowing so many of her people into the Silver City was because she needed the cover to get Lake back into Whitefire. Darian, at her side as always, was in charge of that MISSION. He’d always had so much more of a talent for diplomacy than she, and for such a big man, he was damn near silent when he moved, when he wanted to be. Her arm looped through his as they walked through Archeon’s gates, her eyes darting around from function to function, ignoring the bright lights and watching the Silvers instead.

There was work to do, Darian knew that. There was a time for work and there’d be a time for play. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to stay away from a few of the booths eventually. Although when they were on a mission, Darian was always easily able to concentrate. His mindset was a bit different when there was a task that had to be done. The lieutenant knew that he had to focus. He accompanied Aurora with her arm linked around his, the pair virtually in sync with every step. To most they probably looked like a couple, but to him and the Guard, they were essentially just brother and sister. Hearing his best friend’s words, he knew that she was right. She was always right and when she wasn’t, he was. It’s part of the reason how they balanced each other out so nicely.

“You’re completely correct, Ro.” He replied, his voice clearly agreeing with hers. “But at least they’ll be able to have fun for a bit.” He knew or rather hoped she knew who he meant, knowing not to say the name of their group when there ears everywhere. “Plus it kinda helped us out.” Darian had learned to always look on the bright side of things, even during the darkest times. “I hope you know we’re not leaving after until we go to the star throwing booth.” He pointed with his free hand towards the crowd that was heading towards the booth. “Please? Just once.” He asked with a smile while looking at the younger woman. “Or the ring toss! That looks fun too. Whatever you’re feeling.” Darian added. He just wanted to make sure that no matter what, she enjoyed herself just a little bit. Releasing a few worries for even just a few minutes by the distraction of a booth would be beneficial for the blonde, in his opinion at least.

She could never hate him. Sure, their headbutted more often then not. Adrianna had a heart with sharp edges. Dorian’s was softer. It was his soft heart and pure views that made her get into arguments with him. But she could never hate him. If anything, he mad her heart softer, without even knowing it. If anyone could make this angry, rude girl smile it was him.

Adri even attempted to keep a straight face at his response, but in the end failed. Her lips twitched up into a smile. Dorian’s smile was contagious, even to her. The brother she had lost, that was what she saw when she looked at him. “Smooth, but we both know that I can kick your ass in that,” she retorted, putting away the bite her words once held. “But aren’t you afraid I’ll end up throwing one of those small arrows at some pathetic silver?” It felt wrong to have fun among those she wanted gone.

Darian’s smile grew even wider when he saw Adri smile. He had been on a lot of missions but getting the younger girl to smile was always the hardest of them all. He always felt like he had accomplished something, especially due to the fact that she had a lovely smile.

“Well we’re just going to have to see then, ‘cause I think I’m gonna take it.” He added, mainly because he was trying to tempt her even more to join him and because there was nothing wrong with some friendly competition. “Nope, I don’t think so. Mainly because you’re going to be distracted by the fact that you’re having some real fun. So are you in?” He asked happily.

Matthew had mixed feelings upon seeing Darian. The man had taken care of him since him and Noah showed up in Naercey, but Darian was also on the side of Noah about Matthew training. The kitchen couldn’t be the only place that Matthew was destined for and if it was… Matthew was worse than he thought he was. “I’m totally sure you could! I’m was looking at the trinkets they have or they have those little bears over there. Do you think Garnet would like one of those? Or is that too childish? I don’t know…”

Matthew has always been someone that Darian has liked, and not just because of the clear friendship that he had with his daughter. Although he did admire their friendship. It was why he smiled once more when the younger man mentioned Garnet. “I think that Garnet would love a little bear. It’s not childish at all, I love those bears.” He replied giddily. “I think they’re pretty cool and pretty cute. You can never go wrong with a bear, especially adorable ones.”
