Did You Hear That?

Rivers couldn’t say the same, seeing as he’s been spending the larger amount of his free time as of late watching films and shows. They’re the most surefire way of keeping his mind occupied when he’s got nothing else to do, and heaven knows Rivers didn’t need his thoughts running wild.

"Thank you," he thanked Donnie with a small smile, taking a carefull sip of his hot drink before setting it down in front of himself. Covering his lap with the blanket, Rivers hugged a pillow to his chest, watching the screen with way too much raptness for a nineteen year old boy. "I think the last time I saw it was last month."

Donnie wracked his brain, trying to come up with the last time he'd seen the film, and it was definitely longer than he remembered. "Last time I saw it, I was with you," he said softly, nodding at the memory. "When you couldn't remember anything that one time. So that was definitely a while back. But don't worry. I'm sure I still remember every word," he reassured with a grin before looking back at the television. He thought for a moment that he'd probably have watched it a lot more if the television hadn't been in the living room and therefore closer to his father, but he kept it to himself.

Rivers stayed where he was, idle but for the occasional scratch between a sleeping Moony’s ears. He didn’t feel like he was a moment away from crying anymore (thank God) but his chest still felt tight, his shoulders still a tad tense. He couldn’t help but scrunch his nose up when Donnie wasn’t looking after seeing that the boy was hearing their water in the microwave — Donnie wasn’t settled yet, that isn’t his fault — and when Donnie asked him what he wanted, Rivers answered, “Lots of milk. No sugar, though. Please.

After emerging for the kitchen with their nuked mugs of tea and handing Rivers his, Donnie set off to find a blanket and a couple of pillows – because what was a movie without blankets and pillows – and brought them back over to their spot in the middle of the room. He flipped on the movie before taking his seat next to Rivers. "I haven't seen this movie in a long time," he comments meekly as the previews start up.

Rivers very nearly said something along the lines of I didn’t think I had to worry before and you still left me, anyway but was wise enough to refrain, keeping his mouth shut. He knew that Donnie already felt plenty guilty about that as it was, and Rivers didn’t need to take this out on him. Not Donnie, of all people. “Please?” he asked softly, tilting his head back to look at the other boy better. Wiping at his eyes with the back of one of his hands, Rivers sniffed, “Peter Pan, if you have it.”

Donnie watched Rivers' movements carefully, not realizing he had been holding his breath until he felt his chest hurting. But that could have been cause by the cute, sad boy in his lap asking for Peter Pan of all things. Jesus. Donnie nodded and breathed out a weak, "Of course," before carefully settling Rivers on the ground and getting up to look through boxes for the things he needed. The TV just needed to be plugged in since he had put it on the stand earlier, which he was grateful for. The DVD player and DVDs were all in the same box, great planning on his part, so that was set up quickly as well. The kettle, however, was a different story. For the life of him, Donnie couldn't remember where he has put it. Mugs were in the kitchen stuff box and the tea was in the nourishment box, but the kettle was nowhere to be found. Giving up, Donnie warmed the mugs of water up in the microwave as he called out to Rivers, "What do you take in your tea?"

The last thing Rivers had wanted to do today was scare Donnie off by dumping all of this — this emotional stuff onto him, but now that he’s bundled up in Donnie’s lap, the boy’s hands moving across his back, he doesn’t think he could stop, even if he wanted to. Now, at least, he’s progressed from actual words, eyes welling up with unshed tears and his lip quivering with the effort to keep from crying. He’s not sure what’s more embarrassing — going on and undoubtedly crying, or crying without having said a word.

Donnie could feel how tense Rivers was in his arms. Was he making things worse? Biting his lip, he wracked his brain for something, anything to get Rivers to feel better. His eyes scanned the room as he continued to try and soothe Rivers. "You don't have to worry with me," he said softly. "If you ned to talk about it, I'll listen, if not..." he eyes found a box in the corner of the apartent with the words telly+movies written on it, "I can make us both a cup of tea and we can watch a movie or something?"

"Everything’s just — it’s been so hard," Rivers mumbled, words muffled from where his mouth was pressed into the fabric of Donnie’s shirt. He’d been so hellbent on not saying anything, but it’s like now that he’s started, he doesn’t know how to plug up the well again. "It’s just me, and Moony, and people’re nice to me at school and at work and stuff, but — I’m scared they’re just gonna’ leave. Everybody leaves." Then, in an impossibly smaller voice, "Even — even the ones who promise they won’t, not ever."

Donnie felt like all the air had been sucked out of him and was replaced with a very intense dislike for Declan. He pulled Rivers into his lap and held onto him even tighter, resting his cheek on the top of his head. "I'm so sorry..." he whispered, one hand absently rubbing circles against Rivers' back. He doesn't know what else to say. He wants to tell him hat not everyone was like that. That only idiots could ever turn their back on Rivers and never think twice about it, but nothing came out of his mouth. And he was sure it wouldn't change much if he had said i anyway...he'd just have to be the example.

"I’m glad you’re here," Rivers blurted, suddenly. He missed this, being tucked up under one of Donnie’s arms, feeling small in the best possible way. He even missed Donnie’s terribly corny jokes. "I — I haven’t got very many friends, or anybody, really, so — so it’s nice that I’ve got you again, is what I’m trying to say." Turning his face into Donnie’s shoulder, he sighed. "I’m getting emotional on you. Sorry."

Smiling softly, Donnie shifted so he had both his arms tight around Rivers in some type of weird side hug position. "I-I'm glad I'm here too," he stammered dumbly. (He was always so brilliant with his words...until he was around Rivers, of course. Where it mattered.) His heart broke a bit at the words coming from the boy in his arms. He couldn't imagine Rivers being all alone, couldn't understand how he didn't have hundreds of friends, always seeking him out to have a good time or get some advice or have a great cuddle. It just didn't make sense to him. "I didn't really have many friends back home either..." he continued. If he was being completely honest, he would have said None actually. Just Dash, really. Everyone I'd ever known had gone off to uni and I had to stay at home with my dad. And we all know how wonderful he is. Especially since he'd gotten worse... His mind was wandering. He can't even shut up in his own head.

"How’s that sound, Moons?" Rivers asked the dozing husky, and one of Moony’s ears perked at hearing his own name. "It’s just — he gets really lonely when I’m away, and he gets to all sorts of trouble. Rips up the toilet paper, I’ve lost two pairs of shoes — not that I blame him any for being bored. I’d get bored too, if I’ve been getting left to myself all day since —" Rivers cut off abruptly, arms immediately wrapping around himself tighter as he went quiet. No, no, there was no way he was bringing that up. “Never mind.”

Keeping his eyes on the husky in question, Donnie listened to Rivers intently. He obviously knew what was going on in his head, what he was about to say, and why he decided not to say it. The selfish part of Donnie was relieved that Rivers decided to keep it to himself, and he felt automatically terrible for it. He knew better than to pr, though, so he instead just scooted closer to Rivers and slung a loose arm around his shoulders and put on his biggest smile. "Well I assure you he won't be bored with Dash and I," he paused for a moment before adding "Seeing as how I was born to party and all."

Rivers’ attention shifted over to their dogs, who had settled down and abandoned their previous play fighting in favor of a nap. Dash was mostly on top of Moony, using the husky as a pillow, and Rivers let out an enamored coo.

"They do seem really happy," he admitted, drawing his knees into his chest and wrapping his arms around his legs. "Yeah. Yeah — okay, I’ll take you up on your offer."

Sporting a puppy dog expression akin to those of their furry friends, Donnie observed Rivers closely as he contemplated the offer. When he agreed, Donnie broke out into a grin and nearly tackled the other lad to the floor. He'd be lying if he said there wasn't at least a little bit of selfish reasoning behind the offer. He just loved dogs. And if it gave him an excuse to see Rivers everyday, then that was a (rather large) bonus.

This was where Rivers’ very limited knowledge of X-Men ceased being useful, so he pursed his lips in a way he hoped looked thoughtful and pensive, nodding all the while. “Who knows,” he echoed. “Hopefully, um — that doesn’t happen.”

He shook his head quickly at the suggestion, always one to be scared of being a bother. “No — no, of course not,” Rivers pressed. “I can’t ask you to babysit — dogsit? — dogsit him. I couldn’t ask that of you.”

Chuckling, Donnie rolled his eyes a bit at Rivers' response, knowing that Rivers probably didn't really know much about what Donnie was saying. The fact he made any kind of attempt at all was quite endearing, though. And Donnie was always the type to take what he could get. Especially from Rivers.

He rolled his eyes more dramatically the second go round. "I believe I asked you. It really wouldn't be any trouble. And look how happy they look," Donnie observed, gesturing at the two furry pals.

Rivers knew better than anyone that Donnie rarely ever made much sense — at least to him — but he listened closely anyway, eyes rapt with his attention. “X-Ghost,” he repeated, as if it would make any more sense if he said it himself. (It didn’t.) “That sort of sounds like a combination of Professor Xavier, and — what was her name? The girl who passes through stuff? Kitty! Her.”

Grimacing at Moony, Rivers turned to Donnie, apologetic. “I’m really sorry if he’s too rowdy. He gets worked up a lot, especially on days I have class in the mornings. Poor thing hasn’t got anybody to play with when I’m not home.”

The first rule of X-Men was don't talk about X-Men with Donnie because he'd probably fall in love with you. Or maybe that's just how it was with Rivers. He wasn't sure. (But he really was.) "It does a bit, yeah. But Kitty could do some other crazy stuff too so I hope ghosts can't do that stuff because they could totally back to the future us and who knows where that could get us, really."

"He's alright," Donnie remarked as he glanced at their furry friends nipping at each other. "While I look for a job, he can hang out with Dash and I so he's got some company, if that's alright with you?" he asks looking back over at the other boy.

When Donnie said that it was really cute, did he mean the nickname was cute? Or that Rivers was? Or that Rivers calling him the nickname was cute? A little specificity wasn’t a lot to ask for. Was it?

He wasn’t sure where the conversation was going — back to what they’ve been doing the past year and a half, probably. That seemed likely. What didn’t seen likely, however, was ghost talk. Not that Rivers minded; he wasn’t going to complain, now that he’s finally gotten the chance to talk to Donnie again. “Uh,” Rivers squirmed a little where he was, thinking. “I hope not? ‘Cause if they did, I’d be super freaked out, to be honest. Do you?”

"I dunno," Donnie mused, looking up thoughtfully, as if he'd find a ghost around so he could ask it for himself. "That'd be a pretty wicked ghost power though. Kind of like...an X-Men ghost or something. X-Ghost, if you will." At this point, Donnie is questioning why he has the ability to speak but not the ability to properly think as he watches the two dogs chase each other around. He doesn't attempt to say anything else because he can only imagine what other stupid thing could come spewing out of his mouth, he instead bites his lip and hopes he's not being really awkward.

"Nobody," Rivers chirped, grinning widely. Which was entirely true — because one, he doubts anyone he knows would ever think of a nickname like that, and two, he doesn’t know all that many people to begin with. "I’m sure I’ve called you that before, haven’t I?"

He had no qualms about sitting on the floor, plopping down right next to Donnie and folding his legs underneath of himself. They were close, their knees touching, and Rivers didn’t mind it at all.

"You have, it's just really cute," Donnie explained, smile so wide he imagined it took up half of his face. A moment passed after Rivers joined him on the floor, Donnie wracking his brain for something to talk about. Something to say. He'd spent hours at a time thinking of things he would say to Rivers if he ever saw him again, but for some reason, he was drawing a blank. "Do you think ghosts can read minds?" Brilliant.

"But I’m old," Rivers complained. The fact that he’d taken on the tone of a dissatisfied six-year-old didn’t help his argument in the slightest. "I’m, like, an adult, and everything." He nodded, agreeing. Rivers’ seen more than his fair share of terrible therapists, that was for sure. "That’s actually why I wanted to get into it? Because, like, I haven’t really felt like a professional’s ever helped me very much until I started seeing one around here back in March. She’s lovely. And she lets me beat her at checkers."

Dropping the leash, Rivers let Moony run ahead of him into the open door of the apartment, just barely stepping past the threshold before he was gaping at Donnie. “I haven’t heard that one in a while,” the blond shook his head, disbelieving. He missed the nickname, though — not that he’d ever tell Donnie. “Donniekins.”
