Despite sixty years of trade embargo, and now a total blockade, Cuba has outpaced the US in literacy, life expectancy, and other areas--and this is after the country had already been plundered of much of it's natural resources.

The only thing the US is "proving" with this blockade is that large, powerful countries can use their power to harm smaller, less powerful ones. If, as capitalists claim, "socialism doesn't work," it wouldn't take sixty years of intervention from the most powerful country in the world to "prove" it.

ultimately the best way to prevent abuse is to organize society in such a way that everyone's needs are met wothout having to rely on a parent or employer or boyfriend or any one individual. obviously wont stop, like, manipulation or so on, but the ability to dangle basic needs over someone's head is one of the most powerful and consistant tools of abuse out there. if someone is able to just leave, and know that they will have access to food and shelter and clean water and education, that will enable so, so mamy victims of abuse to do just that.

really funny how like 10% of the comments are people going "nuh uh" and the remaining 90% are people going "this is literally whats happening to me/my mom/etc Right Now"

#I'd have left my abusive ex YEARS earlier if I'd been in a better financial situation #I grew up in an emotionally abusive family and at the time my mom was my only other option for housing #So I made a difficult choice between one abuser and another #Because I was sick and traumatized and could barely function from how debilitatingly depressed I was #So I stayed with that man for TWELVE YEARS #Those are years I will never get back #And all the while I'm getting sicker and more depressed which makes it harder and harder to leave #I don't know how I finally managed to scrape together enough money to get my own place but I did #And I left and had a couple of really good years on my own #I wish this story had a happy ending but it doesn't #Because that's when my illness suddenly got so bad that I couldn't work anymore #Turns out I have a genetic cellular disorder that drastically impairs my body's ability to break down certain neurotransmitters #(among many other things)#So all those years of stress were quite literally killing me #To be clear - stress didn't cause my illness #I'd be sick regardless #But the environment I was in made things much much worse than they might otherwise have been #Anyway I finally did have to move back in with my mom #So all that work I did to improve my life amounted to nothing #And if I'd had financial assistance years earlier maybe none of this would have happened #Maybe I'd have left my ex when things started to get bad #And maybe because of that my illness wouldn't be so debilitating #And I wouldn't have to go back to accepting help from my abusive family #Maybe I'd still be sick but things would be tolerable #I've tried to get on disability but my disease is rare and nobody really knows anything about it so I was denied #(Or so they say - I think it's a LOT more common than the medical community wants to believe)#Anyway these days I'm just trying my best to survive and be as healthy as possible so that maybe one day I can gtfo of here #A better social safety net would have made a world of difference for me and still could
