First terrorist attack in Australia! What an awful, fucking joke.
The only fatal terrorist attack in this country in the past century was a Christian anti-abortion extremist named Peter James Knight in 2001. He shot and killed a security guard and was intending on opening fire within the clinic, but was subdued.Â
In 2004, Peter Joseph Van Tongeren, who had led the Australian Nationalists Movement in the 80s conspired with John Van Blitterswyck, Matthew Peter Billing and others to firebomb four Chinese restaurants, but were arrested. In February 2004 several Asian cuisine restaurants in Perth were firebombed and painted with swastikas.
These are just a few of the attacks perpetrated by white extremists in Australia in the 21st Century. In the 20th Century, and particularly the 80s, the threat of white supremacist violence was far higher. The Australian Nationalist Movement perpetrated dozens of attacks on, mostly Asian, homes and businesses - firebombings, burglaries, aggravated assault and racist slurs and threats spraypainted over residences and businesses. Â
The circulation of bomb making pamphlets and dangerous manifestos amongst these groups indicates a continued interest in violent means amongst white supremacist groups which constitute a subdued (compared to the 80s) but ongoing threat.
