Can we talk about how pretty this version of Kate looks in her introductory episode (Season 7 Episode 4, "The Power of Three")?

Supberb entrance/character introduction! Kate had the 'I'm in charge/butch' swagger down from the off. Beautifully done and the 'reveal' of who she actually was was both sentimental and fitting.

I wish people wouldn't misunderstand the whole point of her being introduced in this way in the episode; one it was for the 'reveal' to be effective but two it's clear she hasn't long been in charge. She's still finding her feet and it sounds like she had a tough time trying to prove herself and the way she wanted to lead UNIT.

Several years (more than a decade) down the line with a vast amount of experience, confidence, a flashy UNIT tower and a budget that it's likely to be a hundred times the original, she can probably afford for people to know who she really is and who she's related to.

I loved this whole scene; the confidence and audacity to drive her vespa right into the command room itself, the helmet removal revealling those curls and thus the transformation from her dreary Wish World persona, and the absolute indignation at having been cast in a role so far from the truth of her real life.

As always, UNIT under Kate was supposed to be a "science leads" organisation. RTD's pivot into turning them back into a "military leads" organisation makes the intended message of this episode come across incredibly clumsily. I love the exploration of Kate taking things too far when the Doctor isn't here to stop her, but recently the Doctor has not been stopping her even when he is there - he'll occasionally tell them not to shoot someone in the moment but they haven't committed to the Doctor challenging them in a meaningful way

The new UNIT team also feels very unbalanced in this regard; Osgood's presence as someone who is purely science and peace keeping is sorely missed and nobody in the new team is fulfilling her role. We have some new military guys and a science officer who generally leans more military than Osgood did and whom I've yet to be convinced actually does much science. I need someone on the team to share the Doctor's unbridled wonder at the vastness of the universe and an unwillingness to cause harm

That said I really want to see more of this exploration of Kate pushing the limit and I'd love to see her actually properly fuck up at some point. I just need there to be real consequences

We're definitely missing Osgood, she'd know how to pull Kate back from the brink, calmly and rationally with a scientific soloution at her fingertips. But I have to say BAMF Kate is a delight to see, letting Jemma properly excercise her acting chops after years of being underused. Sounds like we've got more to come in any case :)
