Here’s another science fiction drama, but this one features a group of six people that wake up on a spaceship with no memory of who they are and how they got there. Over the course of the first season, their strong personalities and memories start to resurface as the time old nature vs. nurture debate is explored. There’s a strong cast–including some especially great female characters like Melissa O’Neil’s Two–as well as a surprising amount of laughs and fun guest stars (like Orange is the New Black’s Ruby Rose). Add all those reasons in with the fact that almost every episode ends with a plot twist or game changing information, and Dark Matter has all the makings of the perfect binge watch. Where to binge it: Season 1 is currently available on Netflix (but sadly not Netflix Canada!).

I’d like to shoutout to my homegirl Android as she pulled one of the classiest moves in Season 1 and went to apologize to Creepy Droid in that one episode when we knew shit was going down. If none of y’all knows what I’m on about, here’s a breakdown:

As the scene opens, my precious pistachio approaches and informs Doll Droid what she’s about

It’s all goin’ good. Good goin’. Nothin’ wrong. You on the right track.

She owns up to her shit and keeps moving forward. Don’t want a stone unturned and all that classy stuff. Now, the other Droid sorta lookin’ at her like she’s got a few sensors loose:

I mean, look at her. Just sort of….not there. While my BEAUTIFUL PEANUT pours out her chipboard of a heart. She even extends a metaphoric hand of understanding, even though this housewifeDroid™ is clearly just not on the same level as the BEE:

My last few #darkmatterweek posts are coming late, like the Raza, but they arrive none the less. 

Day 4 - Favorite Episode

Season 1 Pilot

For me, the Pilot is the episode that determines whether a show is worth the time to watch. And Dark Matter sold itself. I was taken in, hook, line, and sinker by the stasis reveal scene especially. In film (and storytelling in general) mist and fog is used metaphorically. Typically signifying that the events are not taking place in the real world, I think for this show it also layered the mystery of these characters pasts. Perfectly condensing the major obstacle all of these characters would face into a single shot using one tool: the pressurized carbon and oxygen leaving their stasis pods upon waking up. This is also the first time we meet everyone, and the time we are given a choice. We can either choose to  make a split judgement on all of these characters, or withhold it until further information is given us. I think it’s safe to say most of us decided who we liked or not in the first 10 minutes. The writers are giving us plenty to ruminate on, however, as we regret our choices with every episode revealing more ugly secrets or unexpected tender sides to all of our favorites (no matter who they may be).
