how did you distinguish between grandparents growing up (e.g. moms parents vs dads parents)?

Same thing (e.g. two people who you called “grandma”) and use context

Title/nickname + given name (e.g. “grandpa joe” and “grandpa george”)

Two different nicknames (e.g. “granny” and “meemaw”)

Some combination of the above

I didn’t have enough living grandparents for this dilemma to be relevant
