     “One dollar, one dollar and twenty-fi—” 

He flinches, immediately withdrawing his hand.

     “Ow! Wha— no! I’m repaying you, I should do it. This is like, part of the whole redeeming process.” The redeeming process also includes making sure his roommates are out of the apartment to avoid any questions of when he’s repaying them.

For all his protesting, he doesn’t make any effort to continue, instead getting up from his chair and rummaging through the freezer until he finds— aha!

     “Besides, I was almost done.” And he’s back in his seat, Otter Pop in hand. Or Otter Pop on hand, actually, because he’s using the frozen treat to ice the area she pinched. “Just needed another minute.”

        she doesn’t get the opportunity to finish. her expression falls, eyebrows knitting together further. REDEEMING? now he’s all for redemption when he has a few extra coins in his pocket ( literal coins ). and even though this has come seemingly out of nowhere, masika knows tony well enough that it didn’t come from nowhere at all. it came from him, from his head, where he somehow gets the bright ideas to do things like this on the regular. 

        unbelievable, she knows. 

❛    you were not almost done, stop it.    ❜ she purposely reaches over, scatters most of the coins over the area of the table, so he can’t even think of starting where he left off. ❛    i did not come here to watch you count out your lifesavings and extra laundry change.    ❜

     “Two dollars and twenty-five cents, two dollars and fifty cents, two dollars and seventy-five cents,” he’s counting each quarter he slides across the table to her. He’s finally taken it upon himself to repay her for his half of the Chilli’s meal deal. After eleven months. 

     “I swear all eleven dollars is here, just give me a sec. Two dollars and— wait. I lost my place. Hold on.” He collects the quarters and starts again. “Twenty-five cents, fifty cents, seventy-five cents—”

        her expression says more than enough. back and forth, her eyes dart from his face, the money, and then back to him. eyebrows furrow, lips press into a firm and unamused line. as soon as she saw all the coins he’d dumped from his pocket, she should’ve known it would end up like this. 

         eyes narrowing, she can nothing but watch her seemingly best friend start the process from the beginning. like she’s supposed to wait for that. irritated, masika reaches over and pinches the back of his hand, pulling on the skin abruptly so he’ll draw away.

Now he’s furrowing his brow.

     “It’s not even cheap! It’s like fifteen bucks for a couple of games and some snacks — even with the discount.” With that kind of money, he could buy four pounds of gummi worms, or sixty Chicken McNuggets, or a brand new sweater. Fifteen bucks isn’t cheap. Plus the arcade is rad, so he’s really not seeing the issue here.

He picks up his phone and swipes until he finds her profile.

     “Anyway,” another dismissive wave, “she’s totally cute, her name’s Ann, she’s twenty-one, and according to her bio, she’s adventurous.” Going to an arcade and taking a chance on its nachos is pretty adventurous, he thinks, so again, he’s not seeing the issue here. “She likes Fleetwood Mac too, so I think she’s pretty cool.”

        she’s too busy scrolling to really pay any attention to what he may be saying. all she hears are the words “cheap” and “discount”, which is the usual when coming from her friend tony. masika makes a noise underneath her breath - crossed between amusement and disbelief. brown eyes only flicker upwards when the glow of his phone is held up in her line of vision. 

         she guesses the girl is OKAY, but then again - who names their kids ann anymore?

        the movie theater isn’t playing much. or at least, nothing she thinks tony will be into. her phone is placed on the table again, and she reaches across the table to take his, just to get a better look - ❛ adventurous? are you sure that isn’t just code for her saying she’s ready for a threesome after your date? ❜
