i feel like these poses each give a slightly different character to eachother. even when the only real change is the way the hands are posed to sit on the hips.. has anyone noticed this

Here’s a background tutorial that was intended to hand out to the painters on Over the Garden Wall…I’m actually not sure if I ever did (maybe German or Levon can chime in on this) Anyway, I whipped this up super fast in the early days of pre-production and it might be of interest or help to some aspiring digital painters out there.
EDIT: It was just pointed out to me that there’s a missing step 8…that was a typo in the original document…sorry about that.
i realize i only have this on twtter so. if anyone wants a body hair note guide or whtver this is. here u go wweeee
childoodles for ur troubles
edit: i wasn't expecting this to get many notes... there are some things i definitely would've done differently or expanded upon, maybe i will some time when i feel like it (yea, people can have hair on the areola... i've just never seen it for some reason .wtf)
but, most importantly, just have fun with drawing body hair :) it comes in so many different styles for so many people, just get silly with it! use refs!

Reblogging again cause I tried this site last night and if you need background noise to focus this is perfect for that, I was locked the fuck in on a task. And it’s also just gorgeous to listen to

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.
Yee yee!!! You got it right on the nose!
Bounce light is something I didn't cover but I adore it!
Gotta work on my bounce light 💪

There are so many ways to make moodboards, bookcovers, and icons without plagiarizing! As artists, authors, and other creatives, we need to be especially careful not to use someone else’s work and pass it off as our own.
Please add on if you know any more resources for free images <3
recently found out about openverse which i think aggregates a bunch of creative commons images from flickr, wikimedia, nasa etc… pretty handy
I’m shocked so many people don’t know about my go to – Morgue File.
It’s full of searchable, rights free images uploaded by photographers.
Would y’all want/support a gallery page on the site of art that’s been created with the reference photos?
I’ve been running into an interesting thing where non-artsy people are completely confused by the utility of the site, or are unaware that there’s really that much of a demand for reference photos. Even one of my closest friends has been super surprised by how much it’s taken off.
What I’m finding though is I don’t have any easy way to link someone who falls into that category to the art everyone is creating. Sharing/“reposting” art on Tumblr/Bluesky is well and good for folk already on those platforms, but not a great option for people who are less online.
I’m thinking it would be fun to have an art gallery page, to solve this! I haven’t fully plotted it out yet, but my preliminary thoughts are: inclusion by submission/artist request only, all art should be watermarked/signed, the page would clearly state a difference in copyright permissions from the rest of the site, and I could probably link out to each artist’s own portfolio or shop.
Feedback, please! Especially as an artist using the references, what would I need to do to make you feel comfortable with having your work featured in this idea of a gallery?
I’d like to try making a mock-up of this idea! I need probably 6-10 images and accompanying information.
If you’d like to contribute, please send the following to [email protected]:
Some art made from refs on the site, ideally watermarked/signed
How you’d like to be identified alongside it (blog handle, name, etc)
A link to your portfolio or the OG piece you’d like me to use
A note in the email that you’re giving permission to use it on a gallery page
I officially promise not to use anything you send for any other purpose. Which should be implicit, but is worth putting in writing.
Okay, here's a mock-up using a couple of submissions! I'd like your input/feedback, please.
I swapped the copyright statement on this page to try to be as clear as possible about ownership. I'd like feedback on if people feel that's sufficient.
I ended up not linking within the images, because that removes the ability to click on the art and look at a larger version of it (which I haven't got set up yet, oops, but that's the goal). Does that work for folk? I can always swap it, but I assumed it might be desirable for people on mobile or small screens to be able to zoom in.
There will be images on the right side of the page (on a desktop layout) as well. It's empty right now because I need to pair images of similar aspect ratios to get the formatting to line up nicely, but that will get fixed if there's more submissions.
I'd like to hear your thoughts!
