"Holly Wheeler!"
Mike's heart drops. He glances at his baby sister, who freezes at the unexpected call. It's a one in a million chance - and yet Holly seemed to inherit their older sister Nancy's bad luck.
He knows what he has to do. He wishes he didn't, because Will is up there on the stage, but he isn't going to watch his twelve-year old sister fight for survival.
"I volunteer!" he yells, and Holly, who realises what Mike is doing, tries to hold him back but he shrugs her off. "I volunteer as tribute!"
OR: When Holly's name is called for the Hunger Games, Mike volunteers to take her place. As if it isn't bad enough, the second tribute for their district is none other than Will Byers, his ex-best friend.
Mike is stressed. Will is anxious. And Nancy, their mentor, is struggling to stop herself from trapping them both in a cage and forcing them to sort out their feelings towards each other.
2.The Boy Who Volunteered by thebylerverse
Will Byers lives in District 12, where every year two children are chosen to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. When his little sister Jane Hopper is chosen at the Reaping, Will does the unthinkable—he volunteers to take her place.

Some nights, Steve’s side of the bed is empty, and Nancy knows what President Brenner is making him do. So she sets an alarm to get up early and has coffee, a shower, and a blanket ready for when he gets home, because she can’t stop this from happening but she can sure as hell make it better afterwards.
In turn, he does the same for her on the nights where she has to grit her teeth and go out, because the Capitol doesn’t value piano playing half as much as they value her spreading her legs for them.
Then Jonathan shows up for his half-month visits and he’s there for both her and Steve, cooking his mother’s favorite soup recipes, and she kisses Jonathan as he stirs the pot. He takes photos of her and Steve around the apartment, capturing what he calls their “good angles.” Steve chases Jonathan around the living room and kitchen until he reaches Jonathan and tackles him with tickles.
Through all of this, Nancy’s heart will grow and grow until it feels fit to burst. She knows this can’t last, that this fragile relationship can be blown up at any moment by the Capitol, but she just sinks into it for now, letting her be as happy as she can be.

“So…I forage and snare and cook, and you keep them from killing me?” Eddie asked.
“Yep,” Steve agreed.
His eyes raked over Steve’s face a couple of times, searching for the trick. Steve did his best to look open and honest. They’d live longer together, it was clear to see.
“And what’s to keep me from poisoning you?” Eddie asked.
“Same thing that keeps me from killing you,” Steve said. “We each have something the other needs.
