Hi friends, making a post about this here....
My name is Wren, I'm a poor, queer, transfem artist and game developer from the PNW and I need help!
Due to a slew of very unfortunate circumstances outside of my control I am deep in debt with the IRS and am in need of support.
I worked at an indie video game co-op for about 5 years as an art lead. Since we were a co-op, all of our taxes were outsourced to a 3rd party accounting firm since co-op taxes are really complicated in the US. During the pandemic, 5 years into the project I had been working on everything fell apart and I lost my job and then shortly after, the studio shut down. The game I had poured the past 5 years of my life into was cancelled.
I was then notified that the accounting firm we had hired had messed up all of my taxes from the past 4 years and had never filed them properly despite the forms I was seeing each year. I was then told that I now needed to pay a specialist accounting firm $1800 to refile amendments for those years. The total of amended taxes owed added up to $56,000 as i was being charged both as a co-owner and freelancer.
I've managed to pay off a bit of it with the little savings I had and had set up a minimum monthly payment installment of $100/mo but due to regulations changing (I'm unclear on why) my payment plan recently got cancelled and my minimum monthly payments were upped to $650/mo for the next 7 years. I was just barely getting by each month with my previous payments, so at this point I don't really know what to do except ask for help...
I've been fighting this whole situation for a few years now and have already consulted all the help available to me and at this point, i just have to tackle this huge amount with the IRS.
This whole situation and financial burden has been an immense source of stress that I have been trying to get through alone for the past year, but with the recent changes I don't know what else to do except to reach out to my community and ask for help.
I know things are very uncertain and bleak for a lot of folks right now. Any help and support that folks are able to offer is deeply appreciated. My hope is to at least lessen the amount owed so I can feel a bit more confident about being able to keep my head above water in the coming years in this country so I can keep making art and contributing to my community.
Ive gotten an astonishing amount of support on this and I've been able to pay off 46% of this debt so far! Sadly im still way in the red with the huge monthly payments rn and struggling to get by. I could still really use some help with this awful tax situation.
Thank you for reading and for the support! <3
