i am not willing to go to war over the fanon perception of jadzia. traits like fun-loving or party-going are easier to joke about or portray than the way she affirms sacrifice in the defense of the federation and how seriously she takes duty and honor, and her studiousness and sense of responsibility. it's like, whatever, and i mean this earnestly
but i will forever get annoyed at the people misunderstanding the way she dates and is in relationships specifically by headcanoning or straight up implying that she's a cheater or was going to cheat on worf if he had not interrupted (or by some puritan backflip, already has cheated) or that she isn't canonically heavily monogamy-pilled
not only this is a misunderstanding of her character but also. so you think the bisexual woman is likely to cheat on her partner, because she had a past relationship with a woman. and you think that makes her untrustworthy and that her partner was right to be controlling. ok. that's so interesting of you.
Usually I’m not overly bothered by fanon, but in respect to TOS I do think that popular fanon often overshadows or even entirely ignores the (very intentional) narrative purposes of the show.
I think this is most apparent when it comes to the common fan interpretation of the relationship between Bones and Spock. Most often you’ll see the kind of “silly guy”-ification of their dynamic, flattening their frequent conflicts as mutually antagonistic, yet ultimately playful, banter which has no impact on the cultural dynamics on the ship.
This is grating to me because, at least from my point of view, Bones serves a really important narrative purpose in relation to Spock, even beyond the typical emotion vs logic foil. Bones is very clearly set up as a representation of the 1960s American establishment. He’s a white southern man with very typical Western values and a military man sensibility. Spock represents a disruption of the establishment, as a mixed race alien with an entirely foreign system of beliefs and values. This framing of the two characters was definitely not coincidental considering the show was written during a major turning point in American politics and culture thanks to the enormous social reckoning brought on by the civil rights movement.
So when Bones denigrates Spock’s dedication to logic, his Vulcan heritage, etc, it doesn’t read to me as friendly banter. It reads as a very intentional portrayal of racial prejudice. (“pointy eared vulcan” and Spock’s proceeding anger) Within the context of the show, Bones’ behavior towards Spock isn’t a simple conflict of emotion vs logic, but also a conflict of past vs future, prejudice vs acceptance. The flattening of this dynamic to serve the purposes of fandom woobification is frustrating because the relationship that exists in the show is infinitely more interesting and has greater potential for growth and character development.
And it could be argued that Spock is equally disdainful of Bones’ humanity, but I don’t find that to be true. Spock is quick to point out the paradoxes and confusions of human behavior, but it never feels as though it comes from a place of antagonism or vitriol. And, importantly, it’s directed at anyone who he believes is acting illogically. For Bones, his antagonism and prejudice seems directed exclusively at Spock, which becomes especially insidious considering that Spock is the only major non-human member of the crew. The cultural dynamics this conflict creates are central to many of the social themes in the narrative of the show.
To clarify, I’m not trying to execute some sort of take-down of Bones. He’s one of my favorite characters precisely because of the complexity I’ve outlined above. I don’t view him as some sort of ultra bigoted conniving villain, but he’s also not the perfect angel he’s often made out to be in fanon. In fact, I think the sanitation of his behavior by the fandom is disrespectful to his character and the nuances that exist within that character.

I don't know what is it exactly that Brent Spiner did or maybe it's just my interpretation of his acting, but he really makes Data feel like an android. From the future.
Even if he didn't have any makeup on or contact lenses, I'd be like "yeah that's Brent Spiner and that's an android." Maybe it's because his facial expressions are preset and even Data says the wildest things it's passable.
I'm in awe everytime he appears on screen, literally a test to one's acting chops.
I’ve actually thought about this a lot because I’ve had non-Trek friends roll their eyes when they see a picture of Data like, really? They painted a dude gold? That’s it? That’s supposed to make us think he’s a robot? But then they see Brent act and the instant suspension of disbelief that man creates pistol-whips them into the 24th century whether they want to be there or not.
I do think it comes down to Brent’s impeccable consistency. The facial expressions, mannerisms, movement, intonations, etc. In conjunction with the writers, he “found” Data very fast and honed that essence into a precision cut character.
That’s why it’s always so delightfully shocking when we see a “Data gets possessed” or “oh no! It’s Lore!” episode. We witness the pristine Data persona shatter into something unrecognizable even though the actor and his silly gold paint doesn’t change. Absolutely remarkable.

I mean, would they let him play multiple characters (who oftentimes look exactly the same, minus the costume) in an episode if he COULDNT differentiate them in a way that’s clear?

Dr. Mae Jemison, MD, the first black woman in space and first actual astronaut to appear on a Star Trek show, one of the very few people on this planet of whom two pictures can be posted depicting them doing their job on a spaceship with entirely different contexts.

A Star Trek fan film and the brainchild of this guy. Alec Peters is Fleet Captain Kelvar Garth of Izar. Garth was originally played by Steve Inhat in the TOS episode "Whom God's Destroy"
This is his ship, the USS Ares. It's armed to the teeth and totally badass.
Space battles! The Prelude to Axanar short film was released in 2014 and is really cool. It's on YouTube and features Tony Todd, Gary Graham, Kate Vernon, JG Hertzler and the late Richard Hatch. It was released to hype up a 90-minute "Independent Star Trek feature film" about how Captain Garth won the war against the Klingons (remember, this was before Star Trek: Discovery came along with it's version of the Klingon/Federation war). Fundraising commenced, and it was even endorsed by George Takei.
Unlicensed Star Trek merchandise! Model ships, uniform patches, promises of an anthology book (to be written by actual Trek authors), uniforms, coffee table art books, official Axanar licensed coffee (yes they were licensing Star Trek out to others) and more. All perks as part of the Axanar fundraiser, which raised more than $1.4 million. They weren't technically sold, they were "given away" when you donated certain amounts.
And best of all, fans weren't donating to make a Star Trek film, they were donating to fund a film studio where the first third of the movie would be shot. That's right, they were using Star Trek to solicit donations for their own buisness venture. Genius. Except, CBS and Paramount Pictures noticed and sued.
Once the lawsuit hit, Alec changed his tune regarding the salary he paid himself from fan donations, desperately trying to rewrite history. Unfortunately, nobody told him that the internet remembers everything. Details emerged in court filings about salaries and perks for himself and his Axanar friends, about attempting to sell Axanar to Netflix (even though Axanar is set in the Star Trek Universe, features Star Trek characters and Peters has no legal claim to Trek whatsoever). Many people publicly fell out with Peters, including Tony Todd (citing lack of financial accountability), his publicist Mike Bawden (who is suing him over another coffee-related failed buisness venture), his tech guy Terry McIntosh (lawsuits were threatened but never followed up on), his co-writer on the feature script Bill Hunt, and Robert Meyer Burnett, who was to direct the Axanar feature (Peters did try to sue him, but botched the filing spectacularly and it went nowhere. And Burnett replaced Prelude director Christian Gossett who left because he didn't like Peters' studio-funding plan)
A year passed, the last of the donor money dried up and once the judge ruled that Peters had made profit from the Star Trek name, he settled with CBS/Paramount. New fan film guidelines were established to prevent others from doing similar, much to the chagrin of fans who were enjoying the likes of Star Trek New Voyages and other full-length fan episodes and movies like Of Gods and Men and Horizon. Axanar was to be made not as a 90-minute "Independent Star Trek feature film" but as 2 15-minute shorts which are currently (as of 12/30/19) in production with a planned release in summer 2020. What was the planned Axanar movie gonna be like?
The script for the 90-minute feature was leaked by would-be director Robert Meyer Burnett when he (like almost everyone else involved) fell out with Peters. Without the cool documentary format, it's Alec Peters self-insert Best Captain Ever fanfiction. The Axanar Sporkings shreds the script, and it's far more entertaining than reading the script itself. Some highlights:

Update! A fan film of an unmade fan film has been released. Axanar: Interlude picks up immediately after Prelude to Axanar and gives us a look at Alec Peters as Garth of Izar in (mostly) a live action, non-documentery format. It's very much a fan film, and in no way "professional, independent Star Trek" as Axanar was hyped as years ago.
And of course because it's Axanar, there must be ridiculous drama. Paul Jenkins (Axanar director #3 who left the production and is being sued by Alec Peters) had a cameo as an engineer
And yes, a coffee cup was very obviously put into his scene, perhaps as a reference to Game of Thrones doing the same. Also, because of his lawsuit with Peters (which all started after he filmed the cameo) he insisted on having a disclaimer at the start of the film saying he and his company do not endorse Axanar or donating to Axanar in any way. They refused to co-operate and a dispute was raised with Youtube leading to this:

Actually it’s 73 seconds. Data, knowing something of how human minds work, estimates that Riker will give him 60 seconds to come back (because humans prefer “round numbers”, however arbitrary the units). After 60 seconds it will take 4 seconds for Riker to fully process the conclusion that Data is, in fact, not coming back after all, and an additional 9 seconds to build to the optimum level of anxiety.
You know, I was originally like “damn, how’d they get a kid actor to play Q Jr who looks like John de Lancie” and then I see that he’s played by one of de Lancie’s sons.
