Snapper - Scratch for Unity

Snapper is a tool to aid new learners in entering the world of code and programming.

Snapper was conceptualised as part of my capstone Final Project subject in my third and final year of my Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds.

OpenGL Graphics Engine

Perlin Noise generation with information and modifiable values made available via ImGui.

I have also added multiple camera options to provide different views of the environment. The background colour changes based on which camera mode you’re in.

Void Ranger 2015

Throwback to this time last year when I was working on my first student group project. 

Void Ranger pays homage to Lylat Wars by having you shoot down enemies in space all while barrel rolling your way through. You also have the ability to “focus” by slowing down time and getting a better view of your opponents.

Quick post, here’s the game I’ve been working on for the past four months! It’s been a great opportunity to flex my skills and to learn new ones :) The team is still working hard to polish up the game as best we can before the end of the month, and I’ll be sure to make another post then :D

Remember that UI you called ugly in Alpha? This is it now...

It’s been a while since I’ve posted and well.. I’ve been busy for the past three months chipping away on my major assessment for the year. It’s titled “Snack Attack” and is a local multiplayer brawler where players must defeat other players in order to consume them and evolve. We presented our Beta earlier this week and have received some great feedback and have a path for the finish line, with three weeks to go the pressure is on. We hope to record some new footage within the next few weeks to give you all a “taste” of what it’s like to play. Stay tuned for more updates about Snack Attack and other projects I’m working on.

Final Game Jam = finito!

Our theme was chosen with a random name generator and our teams chosen by us - the theme? “The Lord of the Cooking Zone”. I was the only programmer at first which was a challenge in itself - but luckily we were able to find someone to help us out on day two to drive us home.

Having a team you can rely on evidently speeds the process of development and hearing members say this is the most they’ve accomplished in a game jam is rewarding for both them and myself. What’s all the more rewarding is that we ranked second due to our combined efforts.

I often say I will return to project ‘x’ in the future and aside from one main feature that got cut (a camera that can move around/ zoom in based on how far the players were), I don’t see myself coming back to this one any time soon. The reason being is I see this as a complete package as it is that may “want” a little bit more polish.

My Second Game Jam = Complete! 

This week I’ve been working with @jbrymcfly​ and @munchbot among three others on “Cross The Tracks”. The theme was mobile and wow what a difference this GJ was compared to the last. I believe the team had a focus right from the get-go, plus it was a major confidence boost that my pitch got approved right away.

I’ve been looking forward to working on games for mobile devices and believe this will be a great foundation to expand upon in terms of adding more (Android specific/ Unity 3D) features. I’m quite satisfied with what we’ve achieved as a group and apparently so were the teachers as we made the Top 5 games among our peers :D . In other news I’ve created a TODO: list for my engine - a roadmap if you will, and my what a long road ahead it will be. After a two month hiatus, I truly appreciate my past self for commenting ‘his’ code. My deadline is approaching closer day by day and I sense a few late nights are imminent.

I’m back! Earlier this week I worked on my first game jam (wow). With the help of @gcookgamedesign​ and a few others (who don’t have a Tumblr yet) created “Bomb Tag” over the span of two and a half days. It was challenging given there was so little time to get everything done. I decided to go about this using a pair programming technique in an attempt to get scripts done quickly and correctly, whilst teaching my fellow programmer a few things and vise versa. In retrospect I should of prepared myself by revising Unity/ C# and probably should of delegated more time to individual work and switched drivers at least once.

I’d like to revisit this one day and get it working as there are still a few bugs about. Here’s a LINK to the Github repository (created within Unity).

The Beginning… Kinda

Hello World! It’s the 1st of April here in Melbourne where I’m from, which I found to be a fitting time to make my first post. On that account, hello! I’m David, I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Games and Virtual Worlds - majoring in programming. This is my second year in the course and have never found something to be as rewarding as this in my life (well passing the quidditch section in Harry Potter on the PS1 comes pretty close says twelve-year-old me). I wish to share with you my journey of accomplishments in life and programming, and sometimes the failures which happen every so often… - okay perhaps a lot of the time the failures - which are all a part of the learning process.

I’m currently working on my engine which should be able to sing and dance quite soon once I get over this refactoring hurdle.

I’d also like to explore some side projects I’ve been thinking of for a while. I’d like to produce something for the PS4 and also a physics based project that I believe will be quite nice to show off to the world. More details on those much later I guess.

Watch this space within the coming months where I’ll be showcasing some of the projects I’ll be working on as part of my course :) .
