I spent the four weeks leading up to Christmas break working in a group of three on one task: create an ad campaign from the ground up. My group opted to do a series of ads for Allstate Insurance. I was in charge of lighting design and retouching the backgrounds. Overall, the project turned out great and despite endless hours of work and stress I had a really fun time.

Seriously it surprises me how many people don’t know a couple things about pregnancy and babies:

women would not survive 10 months of pregnancy they would die

A baby is nowhere near as developed as it should be to be out in the world at 9 months, but the human body has not evolved to push anything past the size of the head out, everything else the baby is can stretch and squash but the head

the vagina can’t handle anything bigger than the head at 9 months of development so we have to give birth. 

But babies actually need longer than that, really, it’s why they’re such a mess when they’re born and why they’re completely dependent on care, can’t walk, can’t do anything.  Note most other animals can when they are born.  Babies are born too early, it’s kind of a huge and secret flaw in human evolution.  I found it really interesting, so thought I’d share.

First of all: Women go past their due date all the time without dying. In some countries the due date is actually considered to be 10 months, because then no one really ‘goes past’ the due date. Women aren’t as frail as you describe them to be.

I have to agree that our pelvic evolution kinda sucks (which is actually the fault of the PELVIC GIRDLE and NOT THE VAGINA) and it’d be nice to have something a little larger to squeeze a baby through BUT

BABIES ARE NOT BORN EARLY, THEY ARE BORN ALTRICIAL, which means that they need a lot of care and protection while they mature. Puppies and kittens are born even more altricial, requiring even more ‘babying’ and protection than human infants (puppies can’t even poop of their own accord I mean seriously). So, yeah, hardly unique to humans.

And, far from being a “huge and secret flaw” in our evolution, this was the secret to our success as a species. If you birth an infant before the brain is fully formed, you can 1) teach that infant behaviors while the neurons are still forming, 2) achieve MUCH LARGER brain sizes, and 3) be less likely to kill the mother or infant in the course of birth.

Far from huge and secret flaw, this is our huge and secret advantage, and there is a reason we successfully evolved this way.
