Can i ask why everyone is upset over Griez being the captain for 30min? i am a new Athletico fan..

Welcome aboard. First of all, get rid of that ‘h’ in Atlético because we can get mistaken with Athletic club, they also play with red and white stripes, but they’re basically our Dads so we don’t care.

The thing is, this is only my POV, that fans are quite tired of his spoiled attitudes for the last year, it all started last summer when there were already rumours of him leaving to Manchester United and he addressed them very poorly, letting people know that there were chances of him leaving. Atleti had a transfer ban that summer so we couldn’t sign any new players until January, him leaving would had been quite a disaster and despite this he kept on playing with the fans. It all ended with a salary rise and Antoine saying that he was staying bc he knew Atleti couldn’t sign and he couldn’t do that to us (like he was trying to be our saviour or sth).

Then he underperformed for a good part of the season and he even yelled at fans when they critiziced him some of his decisions in a match. Then it’s the constant media play he has done with his future, not giving a single moment of peace to fans who were always worried about him leaving at some point. I mean, if you want to leave, just leave, don’t play along the media desires because that only hurts fans.

And last but not least, the huge circus he created around his decision of staying at Atleti with a documentary and everything. In that case he played with both Atleti and Barça fans and let me tell you it’s such an ugly thing to do. To the point that even Barça fans were like “he better stays at Atleti” when the documentary hadn’t been aired yet.

Long story short: We think he doesn’t represent Atleti’s values and he doesn’t really get what it is to be an Atleti player or how to treat Atleti fans. We had a lot of better options inside the squad (Filipe, Juanfran and even Saul) but he has been chosen instead, so we can do anything about it but being upset.

Hope it’s more or less clear! I tried to sum up one year in a few lines hahaha.

This is a super long gif set, but I wanted to put it all in one post. This is not a post about Griezmann. It’s a post about Fernando. It’s a testament to his character, his integrity, and his compassion. On his last day, in his last match, Fernando was still taking care of his teammates and the team, the club. 

The moment Griezmann stepped on the pitch, he was whistled. Every time he touched the ball, he was whistled. Fernando, being who he is, made sure to hug Griezmann many, many times. (Seriously, he kept going out of his way to hug him - I saw this at least three times in the second half). Not only to reassure Griezmann, but also because he knew that the fans wouldn’t whistle Griezmann while he was hugging him. 

After a while, Fernando told Griezmann this: “We won’t reproach you for anything.” Then: “We really need you here.” And you can see Griezmann tear up upon hearing Fernando’s words, the guilt from what’s happened (as well as what may inevitably happen) and the emotions finally affecting him. 

This is why Fernando Torres is a fucking legend. Because he always has the right words. Because he cares about his teammates more than just as teammates, even when they don’t deserve it… because he’s always puts the good of the team first.
