Their first meeting was a bit rough.

Simon had a bad reaction when pulled out of the submarine, since he was still in a high stressed state and the first thing he saw was a faceless, non human being. Once he healed enough to speak and figured what happened, he couldn't stop apologizing to Adrian.

Adrian was never mad at him for that of course, they gladly reassure Simon every time he needs and had to force Simon to rest at times, since the human wanted to help around their ship to make up for it.

Adrian petting Simon's head is a habit that they got from Rocky doing the same to Grace. So they believe this is how humans comfort each other (Don't worry, Simon doesn't mind, this man is staarving for kind physical contact)

I'm still conflicted if giving Simon a mutated tail or not, or if it's something it will show with progressive stages of mutation, i'll see

Fyi, when i use the "<< >>" and the english is not as smooth, it means they are using a translator. When the english is more fluent (at the best of my non english speaker abilities) it means they are speaking only in eridian.

More on that idea i have about Simon coming to Erid around the time Grace is just arriving (you can find that here), I had the thought about a more ambiguous version of it all.

Grace and Simon are DYING. They are not making it. Grace is starving, dehydrated, and severely lacking in nutrients. His brain is getting eaten away. Simon is drowning in blood, actively mutating at a crazy rate, and has been hallucinating for days before his end.

I love the thought of their deaths bleeding into each other. Seeing each other as they get closer and closer to their ends.

Simon sees a frail man, so pale and tired. He’s unable to stand, can barely see through the pain. He thinks of him as a ghost. Maybe someone killed in the ocean. Maybe someone he killed here to haunt him.

Grace sees a man covered in blood and burns and teeth. His eyes are bloodshot and terrified. He’s strong in body and intimidating, but he shakes and curls in to look small. Grace thinks he’s some horrible nightmare at first, but when Simon cowers from him, he feels the urge to soothe him.

They both think the other isn’t real, some hallucination that their brains conjured up as they lost all sanity. Still, Grace tells Rocky not to forget to feed Simon too and Simon still clings to Grace’s thin hands and apologize for hurting him.

I think my favorite way to combat the white savior trope with bloodymary while still acknowledging that yes, Grace IS gonna have to do some saving and deconstructing (Simon DID just get out of the worst week of his life and that’s not even mentioning the death cult of it all) is to have Grace just be some guy roommate.

Like, the eridians did all the work. They found the sub however they did, they used the knowledge they had bringing Grace back from the brink of death to do the same with Simon. Grace is only there for fact checking and asking “hey, we don’t have the budget or space to make a whole new enclosure, mind if we stick this guy in there with you???”

My second favorite way is having Simon appear while Grace is in that “starving to death and dying from every disease imaginable” point and the eridians are taking care of BOTH of them, but that also makes me want to die with them.
