Them as a love interest in a book ā¦ļø
Jing Yuan, Boothill, Dr. Ratio
Content warning: war themes
You can find the first part right here ā” these ones got a lot longer, so I only made three this time.
Genre: Historical Fiction, romance
Trope: co-workers(?) to lovers
War is raging and as a General, Jing Yuan is in a tight spot. You see, carrying the weight of numerous lives on one's shoulders wasn't the easiest of things, especially when decisions had to be made at rapid speed sometimes.
You, on the other hand, had only seen Jing Yuan in passing. When the war started, you had signed up as soldier, wanting to fight alongside your comrades. However, you hadn't passed the health check. Cursed heart murmurs.
You were a stubborn one though, so instead of enlisting, you went along with the Voluntary Aid Detachments, working as a nurse along with the other women and men.
The first time you saw Jing Yuan was when you were dispatched to the camp near the frontlines. He was confident, self-assured and somehow always knew what to do. Still, you thought him a bit arrogant.
You hadn't personally talked to him until the day he returned injured from the field, the bullet still stuck in his shoulder. Since all the other nurses were busy tending to other soldiers, the General was left in your care.
Needless to say, the evening ended with many snide remarks and you flicking his forehead once. He laughed at that. You weren't sure how he was able to stay that calm.
Jing Yuan visited the nurses' tent more often after that, nagging at you whenever you were working, finding your reactions priceless. He enjoyed those little interactions, no matter how often you told him to go and do his duties.
And thenā BOOM! (everyone please gasp)
The camp is being raided! Enemy soldiers are everywhere!
At that point, Jing Yuan knows that you are too stubborn for your own good and wouldn't leave the wounded soldiers behind even if it costs you your life.
He does not approve. Of you risking your life, that is.
Jing Yuan fights his way through to you, storming into the tent and finding you pressed to the ground by a man holding a gun to your head.
Before you can speak his name, the man above you is made a head shorter and you are being dragged out of the tent.
You had never seen him as furious as in that moment. He is still gentle but his anger was palpable, oozing from him in waves.
Once you have re-grouped with some of the scattered soldiers and were out of immediate danger, he checks you all over for injuries, giving you the scolding of a lifetime.
Afterwards, you accompany him almost all the time. You find solace in each others presence, basking in the moments where you can forget about the horrors of war.
Whenever he is away to fight, you wait anxiously for his return and every time he comes back, the first thing he does is go to see you.
One evening, he takes your hands in his and asks; "When the war is over, will you do me the honour of becoming your husband?"
You cry and almost slap him across the face. (Handling emotions is difficult sometimes okay??)
Ending: Happy ending! The war is over, you get an apartment together and (if you are a kids person), you adopt two children who have lost their parents in the war.
(Hooray! You guys got away with a happy ending this time but I was SO š¤š» close to have Jing Yuan die in the trenches and being found with a letter in his pocket with scribbled ideas of how to properly ask you to marry him)
Genre: Western drama, romantic sub-plot
Trope: Childhood friends to lovers
Your mother is the owner of the city's most well-known saloons. It was a family business and you always knew that one day, it would belong to you. Thus, you have been helping out ever since you were little, handing out beverages and meals, chipping in into conversations of the regulars (which was the majority of the city, really), and threatening ill-behaved drunkards with the revolver that your mother thought she had hidden better.
Boothill was one of the few children that would accompany his parents to the saloon. It was unavoidable, therefore, that you spent most your time with him and the other kids around your age.
Your mother was reluctant about him, knowing that his family had their gang-business going on. Still, with them keeping the city safe from rouges and paying handsomely in the saloon, she turned a blind eye.
Now, in your early twenties, the business had been handed down to you (not because your mother died but because she simply said she was too old, which she was not, but whatever). Boothill still comes by whenever he isnāt out to collect bounties.
He loves telling you about the bounties. The enemies he faces, the precarious situations, all down to the last detail. You are pretty sure he likes to exaggerate sometimes but enjoy listening to his stories all the same.
The townspeople call you āBoothillās sweetheartā despite both of you denying any kind of romantic relationship (the townspeople know better).
You visit the farm of his dads once a week. With the products from their farm, they became the most reliable supplicants for the saloon.
Boothill teaches you the way around the farm; taming the horses, tending the cows and sowing the crops. You love those days; spending time with the young man without a care in the world.
You end up confessing first. Bathed in the light of the moon by the lakeside. Your horses grazing behind you and a bonfire burning next to you.
Boothill had never been struck as speechless as he was just then. You canāt help but laugh, which only made the pink on his cheeks much brighter.
He rolls over, hovering above you and shutting you up with his lips on yours.
Ending: Happy ending~ Occasionally, some of Boothillās targets would try to go after you as revenge, forgetting that you were very well capable of using a gun yourself but it didnāt spare Boothill the momentary panic each time.
I know this setting is rather similar to his actual backstory but Boothill deserves this happy life and it just came so naturally :,)
Genre: Mystery, romantic sub-plot
Trope: āEnemiesā to lovers (you guys actually just canāt stand each other at first)
You have met Veritas Ratio in university. You had wondered for a while why so many students seemed to avoid him.
Then you, as one of the top students in your course, stood against him in an academical debate. He had a certain way of making you feel like an insignificant worm within the span of a minute. Then, you knew.
After university, youāve seen countless scientific articles of his in more areas of expertise than any human could reasonably have so much knowledge about.
Now, years later, you stand in front of the university building again, all because of him.
Youāve established a name for yourself as investigative journalist and for some unknown reasons, that path had led you right back to Veritas.
He was smart, capable, and probably the only person who could help you with your newest investigation. A Gang of criminals was going around town, strewing riddles around that the police wasnāt able to solve.
Veritas found the case to be below his niveau. He tells you as much after you walk into one of the lecture halls after his class has been dismissed (because of course he is now a professor as well).
You argue with him for half an hours as to why the case would be of interest to him, realizing yet again why you were so happy to have been rid of him in the past.
He reluctantly agrees after making sure that it might be up to his standard, saying it had at least the potential of being interesting.
Thus started the most difficult and probably strangest investigation of your life.
You only call each other by your last names.
Arguments between the two of you are almost a constant companion but a part of you appreciates the brain workout. You sneak around places that you should not be having access to, question people involved in the crime cases and look at the clues that the gangsters left in their wake.
You were behind on schedule but getting closer to the goal nevertheless. Veritas notices your nerves flaring with each passing day of no apparent breakthrough, asking about it only because your constant finger-tapping annoys him.
You tell him that your boss was reluctant to give you the case to begin with, saying it was too much to handle for you alone (not minding Ratio),
It happens the day after. Your boss summons you to the office, saying youāll be taken from the investigation and that youād need to focus on other articles.
Now, Veritas Ratio was not so happy with that. Sure, he and you had your occasional clashes, but he wasnāt going to let someone with half your IQ rob you of opportunities. He notices then that he might have developed an unreasonable and utterly ridiculous soft spot for you (not that he would admit it).
Your boss, being intimidated by Ratio like every mortal was, let you continue your investigation. And that you do.
He is the one to crack the case in the end.
He says he doesnāt need the extra credits for it because it was simply a brain exercise for him but perhaps it was because he wanted your name being the focus of the article instead.
Your realize that he might not be the worst person to have around and end up coming to him for future investigations a lot.
Ending: Happy ending! Veritas appreciates the clash of wits. He invites you to a private chess duel ā which is his equivalent of a birdās dance to woo a possible partner. It takes an awfully long time for you to get the signal and even longer until you establish a romantic relationship but itās well on its way!
No tragic endings this time ( ̄^ ̄)ć
None of the pictures are mine
