I have mild prosopagnosia a.k.a. faceblindness. I struggle to recognize faces. Unlike what most of the internet portrays it, no, you're not a blank face. It's more like... you have several different rocks. Slight color variation, shape, etc. Yes, side-by-side you obviously can say they're different, but if you take them out of context, you can never be fully sure what rock corresponds to what name. If you're long enough around them, which is probably a couple of years, or they're very distinct, you can memorize them more easily.

For me, I believe it's because my brain doesn't put human faces on a "priority list". I recognize human faces like I recognize dog or cat faces. Most people have brains that recognize faces easily, and can easily link what structure corresponds to what name. I mean, we evolved to do so. We're so incredibly good at recognizing faces that if something is slightly off, we get that "uncanny valley" off of them. This is probably why "uncanny valley" doesn't bother me as much.

Why am I talking about this on a post related to Project Hail Mary? Because with the idea of just how malleable and strange the human brain is with recognizing these things... What if Grace, after spending an infinitely long time on Erid, stops being able to differentiate human faces, and starts being able to only differentiate Eridians?

He can tell on first glance which Eridian is Rocky out of a billion other similar-looking Eridians. He can tell which one is Adrian. He can tell which of his thousands of Eridian students which one is who.

And just imagine: what if he gets to visit Earth one day? After all of this? Just if. Just visit it.

He goes (well, not home, because Erid is home for him now at this point) to Earth to see other people again. But, well, after spending so much time on Erid, he has extreme prosopagnosia. He has NO clue who anyone is. Calls everyone by the wrong name. He can't differentiate or recognize them. All humans appear the same to him.

Because his brain said that his priority list are those little rocks he lives with. That's who he knows. That's who he can recognize at first glance.
