Beltane Tips!
* Wear lots of green
* Have a bonfire and fill it with fragrant incense, flowers, and sacred woods
* Bake tiny colorful cookies (with flowers, if you can!) and offer them to your local fae
* The veil is the thinnest this time of year - the only other time it’s this thin is during Samhain. Venerate and honor the spirits, and guard against malicious ones with salt along your windowsills or doors
* Wash your face with the morning dew to fill yourself with beauty
* Eat sexually suggestive foods or aphrodisiacs
* Dance. Dance a LOT. Turn on some drum-heavy music and let loose. Do it alone in your room at night, if you have to.
* Go talk to all your local plants and give them little offerings of water. Blessed water charged with a quartz crystal would be extra nice.
* Do a tarot reading for yourself (or have someone else do it for you). This is a wonderful time of year for divination!
* Buy flowers. Pick flowers. Wear flowers. BE FLOWERS.
* You don’t have to have sex to have a legitimate Beltane, but you can always show yourself some love if ya know what I mean *wink wink*
* This is a holiday of sensual pleasure. That doesn’t necessarily mean sex - it means really indulge your senses. Take a hot, luxurious bath. Dance until you work up a sweat. Eat foods that you love and crave. Smell the flowers, feel your bare feet in the grass, splash your face with fresh water. FEEL the world around you - the spirits are alive and active on Beltane! Engage your emotional, intuitive, sensual side and you might catch a glimpse of one or two.
* Reach out to friends you haven’t talked to in awhile. Strike up a friendly conversation. Celebrate friendship!
* Meditate with crystals that open your third-eye or specifically relate to the fairy or devic realms - chlorite phantom quartz, moss agate, rainforest jasper, green diopside, spirit quartz, azeztulite, most green crystals, prehnite, a rock you found someplace outdoors that feels charged with earth energy - you choose!
* Perform solitary spells for abundance, protection, fertility, romance, love, sex, and divination!
* Plant seeds and start a magickal garden. There are lots of plants you can grow indoors pretty easily that have magickal properties.
* Dedicate an altar to Flora, Cernunnos, Bes, Pan, Hera, etc - any deity you can think of who rules fertility, marriage, romance, and abundance!
Hope you all have a wonderful Beltane!!!

Hello witchy friends and divination enthusiasts! In honor of the upcoming full moon, I thought I would put together some info on the spread I most often use for this moon phase. Since I know not everyone will resonate with all of the cards in this spread, I’ve included some info on alternative cards you can add or use to replace others so your reading can be completely customized to what you want and need. Get creative with your spreads and don’t be afraid to come up with your own! 🌕
As always you can book readings on my website or my Etsy page or you’re welcome to chat with me here or on Instagram. 🔮
The Mohs Hardness Scale: A bit of Geology every Witch who uses crystals should know.
Hi all!
As a Geology nerd who is also a witch, I was inspired to make this post by all the crystal-related confusion that pops up throughout the witchy internet! Hopefully, this will help someone out there on their journey!
What is the Mohs Hardness scale, and why should a metaphysical fan of crystals care about it?
The Mohs Hardness scale is a scale of 10 minerals that are used to determine the hardness of other minerals that geologists find in the field. It is super useful for the crystal witch to know and use, because:
It will help you to identify your unknown rocks and minerals. (It is not the only way to do so, but it is the most accessible. The Mohs number for every mineral is just a google away! It is also 100x more reliable than color, which is almost useless for accurate identification, as even minute chemical impurities can radically influence color, and many many minerals produce both multiple colors and identical colors to other minerals.)
It will help you care for your crystals. (Ever open a bag to find one of your stones has broken another, or destroy a mineral by getting it wet? The Mohs hardness scale will prevent those mishaps.)
It will help you make safe choices about your crystal waters/elixirs. (Crystals that are too soft will become absorbed by the water.)
The Mohs Hardness Scale
(The scale has 10 minerals, with 10 being the hardest, and 1 being the softest. In between the main minerals I have put a few household items that can also be used in lieu of a stone.)
10. Diamond
9. Corundum
8. Topaz
7. Quartz
6. Feldspar
5.5 - A piece of glass
5. Apatite << Anything past this point is not water safe!
4.5 : An Iron Nail
4. Fluorite
3.5 : Copper
3. Calcite
2.5 : Your Fingernail
2. Gypsum (aka Selenite)
1. Talc
What if I don’t have all of these?
No problem! Just start looking up the hardnesses of what you do have, and build your own set! (The Mohs number is on each stone’s wikipedia page! :) ) Don’t worry if you don’t have anything harder than quartz (7) or softer than your fingernail (2.5); you won’t be testing diamonds too often, and you’ll always have your fingernails! (Hopefully!)
How to Use the Scale:
Identification:
Say you’ve got a lovely new stone, but you have no idea what it is! You’ve googled a few possibilities that seem right, but you’re not sure. Here’s where the Mohs scale comes in!
Google the Mohs numbers for the stones you think it might be, and write them down. For example, you’ve got a lovely new blue-green stone, but you’re not sure if it’s Fluorite or Aquamarine. You write down the number 4 for Fluorite and the number range 7.5-8 for Aquamarine.
Next, you’ll gather items that are harder and softer than your possible minerals. For our example, I’ll have you start by grabbing the easily accessed Quartz.
Now, attempt to scratch the crystal with your Quartz. If it can scratch the crystal, your mystery stone is softer than quartz. If it can’t, your stone is harder than quartz. For example, if it can’t scratch your blue stone, you can rest assured that it is not Fluorite (4), and it is very likely to be Aquamarine (7.5-8).
Repeat step number 3 with items of different hardness until you have narrowed down your Mohs Number. Let’s say that the quartz does scratch our mystery stone.This means the hardness is <7. Keep repeating scratch tests until you can confirm that a 5-hardness item can scratch your stone, while a 3-hardness one cannot. Once you’ve done that, you can safely identify it as a Fluorite! (Or, if it does not meet those requirements, you’ve gotta start googling new possibilities!)
Note: this is not a FOOL- PROOF way to identify stones, as minerals of the same hardness can also have the same color. It is a very useful way to narrow down the possibilities, however. Try to consider as many attributes of the stone as possible when identifying.
Safe Storage:
When deciding whether to box or bag crystals together, try only to combine those of similar hardness. Your carnelian will smash your fluorite, and your selenite won’t long survive a rowdy citrine, and it will be very sad for all involved! :(
Checking for Water Damage and Elixir Safety:
While I also highly recommend that a crystal witch familiarizes themselves with one of the many crystal toxicity lists online, one of the things that can make an elixir dangerous is particles of minerals being absorbed into the water. This occurs with many soft minerals; anything less than or equal to 5 on the Mohs scale is risky. A good rule of thumb is to stick with those 6+ on the Mohs Scale if you want to put it in or clean it with water. To clean your softer crystals, buy a cheap toothbrush and dry brush them — it’s been super useful for me!
~~~~~
Hopefully this wasn’t too boring, and will be of use to someone!
I also have an idea for an in-depth post about identifying crystals. Let me know if anyone would be interested in reading that!
Either way, blessed be!
(Note: I am NOT a scientist! This is just some hobby geology knowledge for you all! If any actual geologists out there see any mistakes in my post, please know I want you to point them out!)
Circle casting 101
(Artist: kada-bura !)
A magickal circle is an energetic construct that you build or envision around yourself before working magick, doing a ritual, some like to cast a circle before meditating or reading tarots. For a solitary practitioner the circle is typically 5-6 ft in diameter, but the size expands based on the size of the group. It can be defined physically, energetically, or both.
Circles provide protection and serves as a container for your personal energy as well as the energy you conjure.
Please remember that this is just what i personally like to do when casting a circle, but that there are many methods.
Preparation for circle casting
1. Determine how much space you will need.
2. Cleanse your area. Vacuum, sweep, throw away any trash in the area.
3.Make sure you have everything you need for your ritual! Theres nothing more frustrating than having your circle casted and realizing you’ve forgotten an herb or any supplies you need for the work you’re about to do.
4. Purify your area. Light purifying incense, sage, sprinkle salt and holy 💧. Most importantly, Visualize the negative energy dispersing. If you don’t focus & visualize, your physical actions will have little effect. Visualization is hands down one of the most important things in any and all magickal workings!
5. Now its time to cast your circle!
Visualize protective energy coming from within you and direct it towards your casting arm. Focus it through a casting tool (Athame, wand, or ✋) and visualize a beam of energy coming from it and settling on the ground. Trace your circle with this energy, 3 times in a clockwise direction. Once for protection, once for focus, and once for power.
Call the 4 quarters
Face North and say “I call to the North, to the element of 🌏. Grant me (us if not practicing alone) your endurance, your strength.” Sprinkle salt onto your altar or crumble 🌏 into a bowl on your altar.
Face East and say “I call to the East, to the element of Air. Grant me your creativity and your intuition.” Light incense, wave a fan,or drop feathers onto your altar.
Face south and say “I call to the South, to the element of 🔥. Grant me your passion and your energy.” Light candles.
Face west and say “I call to the West, to the element of 💧. Grant me your empathy and your emotion.” Pour blessed/storm/🌙/natural 💧 into a bowl or into your chalice.
Now would be the time to call on any deities you’d wish to work with. You can call any Goddess or Angel by personalizing this to them. I typically do not personally work with deities, but if you were to want to, Call to them similar to how the Elements are called. Ex. “I call to Gaia, Mother Goddess, Spirit of 🌏.” and then place an offering symbolizing them, so for Gaia you might place grain on your altar as an offering.
If not solitary, now would be the time to invite others to the circle. The group leader typically invites others in by a series of phrases, although i know every coven has their own method fine tuned for themselves, This is just the method i’ve seen used and am familiar with. Ex. Group leader:”Children of the Goddess, I now invite you to enter our circle.” Each member will be asked “How do you enter this circle?” The response should be “In perfect 😍 and perfect trust.”
Now its time to raise energy. This is the most important part of this process.
Here are a few ways! There is no wrong way to do this part, and there are SO MANY ways. You can fine tune this all to you.
Witches Rune Chant
“Darksome night and shining 🌙,
East, then South, then West, then North,
Hearken to the witches’ rune;
Here i come to call thee forth.
🌏 and 💧, Air and 🔥.
Wand and pentacle and 🗡️,
Work ye unto my desire,
Hearken ye into my word.
Cords and censer, scourge and 🔪,
Power of the witches blade waken all ye unto life,
Come ye as the charm is made.
👑 of Heaven, 👑 of Hell, Lend your power unto my spell,
and work my will by magic rite.
By all the power of Land and Sea, By all the might of 🌙 and ☀️,
As I do will, So mote it be;
Chant the spell, and be it done.
Eko, Eko Azarak
Eko, Eko Zamilak
Eko, Eko Karnayna
Eko, Eko Aradia”
Meditating to raise energy. Visualize energy building and building by 👀 by 👀 warm, yellow light fill your body until its expanding out of your body and filling the dome above your circle and visualize it filling with energy.
🎶 or Drumming, Dancing and Chanting.
Once you reach your desired energy level, it is time to get into whatever spellwork or ritual you desire to preform!
ONCE YOU FINISH YOUR WORK SAY GOODBYE TO THE ELEMENTS AND THANK THEM FOR THE POWER THEY BROUGHT. ALWAYS SAY GOODBYE AND THANK ANY DEITIES CALLED ON.
I like to walk the circle the opposite way of its casting three times, and voila!
Keep in mind that this is just my method! There are many methods and this is just one of them.
The gods haven’t left us, but some say they are forgotten
Zeus roars his battle cry as lightning strikes skyscrapers and thunder rolls over corn fields and grassy plains.
Hera sings a lullaby to the crying newborn babies every night and hold the hand of those born early, those fighting to survive.
Artemis screams her protest in the voices of every woman, young and old, as they raise their fists for equality.
Demeter whistles through the streets of cities, rustling the leaves of scarce trees, reminding the concrete jungle of the jungles around them.
Poseidon bellows through the foghorns of steam ships, cruise liners and cargo ships as they dock into the harbour.
Hephaestus hammers his forge’s red fires with the punch of a time-clock and in the muscles strains of the working man.
Apollo blasts his voice through every headphone, earbud and speaker turned way too loud.
Ares’ battle cry echoes through a stadium as the crowd cheers after a national anthem is played.
Aphrodite whispers in the giggles and “I love you"s said between lovers intimating.
Hermes laughs in the roar of every engine and the gurgle of gasoline through the pump.
Dionysus cheers in the spirit of every young person celebrating themselves and making their lives enjoyable.
Athena hums in the silence of a late night library visit, in the turn of a page and the scratch of a pen.
Hestia smiles in every host saying “come in”, in every oven’s beeping, and the sigh of relaxation in ones home.
Hades beams in every dark humoured joke, in every Halloween night, and in every morning after.
They say the gods are gone, forgotten and a world away. But they are here, if you look for them.
