Tips for living alone
Buy a bat (I have my old color guard rifle) or similar. Keep it in your room/near your bed.
Get a lock for your bedroom door.
If youâre moving into a new place, change the locks. Who knows who had a key to your place before you.
Keep your phone/a phone in your room.
Get a weather alert system set up. App, weather call, little weather radio that tells you about major weather events.
Adopt a pet
Wave at your neighbors. Take note of the ones that make you uneasy. Watch out for kids always.
Be nice to your mail person. No matter what.
If you choose to drink/etc alone, unplug your wifi router. Youâll thank me.
Have extra seating. People sit when they visit. Your one comfy chair is great for you. Not so great for you + grandma + ur five cousins, your aunt, and a couple others.
Learn the self-Heimlich
When you take a shower, bring your phone to the bathroom in case you fall your phone is no longer halfway across the house, itâs just on your counter
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Idk what else
If you live in an one-room apartment, put a screen around your bed. Itâll feel less like you visit people, esp. strangers, into your bedroom. Also youâll feel much safer sleeping in the enclosure. Cook enough for a few meals each time you cook, and freeze the extra food. That way youâll prevent things from expiring and itâs great when you donât feel like cooking or have no time or energy for it.
Give a key to someone near you trust, or hid it somewhere few people will look, like up in a tree. Shutting yourself out isnât nice, esp. not at night. Put something translucent like curtains or stickers for windows where people can walk past or look in. Youâll feel less watched that way.
Put some contant money somewhere in your room. Good to have in case your bag gets lost or stolen.Â
Feeling lonely? Remember, online contacts are not less valuable.
I would say maybe set reminders for everything too. Taking meds/vitamins, working out, going to sleep, waking up.
Buy a small fan for white noise at night if youâre the kind (like me) that gets anxious at all the little ambient noises that ANY building can supply in the dark. Donât watch scary movies in the dark by yourself, with no visitors. NETFLIX, if you can afford it. Itâs also useful because you can watch movies / shows with your online buddies at the same time, miles and states and (sometimes even) countries apart.
get an app like safetrek. never walk into allies or empty streets if there is a more populated/well-lit route to your destination. keep emergency contacts in your wallet and a red cross card with your blood type on it in case anything happens. carry a list of medications youâre allergic to, if any.Â
walking around with a headset or headphones discourages people from yelling at you on the street, and itâs easier to escape from hasslers. however, itâs pretty advisable to not have anything actually playing so you can be aware of your surroundings. if anything, have it at low volume.
if you get grabbed on the street (this used to happen to me a lot), immediately scream, and the person will usually get startled, giving you time to get away.Â
if you feel like youâre in a really bad place, call someone, or even pretend like youâre calling someone. say where you are. act like youâre planning on meeting up with them. be loud about it. make it seem like someone will notice if you go missing, even for a little bit.
also u should look up manufacturerâs coupons like damn i feel like a successful suburban mom every time i walk into cvs and save 2 dollars on my toothbrushes
PSA PSA EVERYBODY NEEDS
Pro-Tip
I know most people associate LUSH Cosmetics with white girls and bath bombs but products from this beautiful company have faded my scars and stretch marks, completely gotten rid of my acne, fixed my dry skin problems, thickened my eyelashes, laid my edges, made my hair grow like crazy⌠I can go on and on. Iâve actually never tried the bath bombs, but their skincare and haircare products work magic.
Fading Scars / Stretch Marks Organic Therapy Massage Bar
Extra Dry Skin King of Skin In-Shower Body Conditioner, Skin Drink Facial Moisturizer, Sultana of Soap Bar, Tender is the Night Massage Bar, Eachâs a Peach Massage Bar
Acne Fresh Farmacy Solid Cleanser, Eau Roma Toning Water, Full of Grace Serum Bar
Thickening Lashes Eyes Right Mascara / Lash Milk
Edges R&B Hair Moisturizer (if you put this on your edges before wrapping your hair, theyâll be relaxer-straight when you wake up, lasts about 12 hours), Dirty Styling Cream (cream-based edge control with a matte finish, no more shiny or crunchy edges)Â
Hair Growth NEW! Shampoo Bar, Retread Hair Conditioner
I was asked to list the rest of the products I currently have in my possession, so here yâall go!
FACE / HAIR STUFF
Magical Moringa Facial Moisturizer Oh my lordy. Let me tell y'all about this stuff. Itâs marketed as a moisturizer but I use it as a primer because when you put this on your face, itâs completely matte. Like completely. All day. And it will lock your makeup in place like no other. You can sweat in it, swim in it, whatever. Shit wonât budge. Ever.
Jason & the Argan Oil Shampoo Bar Amazing for volumizing. It made the three bundles in my head look more like five when I used this thing the first time, I kid you not. Also gives your hair a really natural shine. I only use it when I really need a volume boost, otherwise itâs just too much.
No Drought Dry Shampoo If you have a weave, you need this stuff. Period. A lot of times, the natural oils in our scalps (referring to my fellow black women here) are too heavy for Brazilian, Peruvian, etc hair, and so itâs easy for weave to get weighed down between washes. Shake this stuff in your hair, brush it out - bam, flow city.
Honey Trap Lip Balm My favorite lip balm, ever. Really improves the texture of your lips and seals in moisture. However, this is not for fixing chapped lips - use Ultrabalm for that first, and then this to prevent them from chapping again. Also, pro-tip, if you apply it before liquid lipstick, your lipstick wonât crease or dry out all day.
MASSAGE BARS
Strawberry Feels Forever Smells like fresh strawberries! Has a much thinner consistency than the other massage bars, so it can be used every day, like a solid lotion.
Soft Coeur Smells like chocolate and honey, and is ridiculously moisturizing. More heavy-duty than the other bars, so I like to only use this one on spots like my knees, heels, and elbows.
From Dusk til Dawn The shape of this one is amazing. Itâs shaped like a cone, so it gives a deep massage when youâre using it. Definitely recommend if you have any sort of muscle pain.
SCRUBS
The Rough with the Smooth This stuff smells soooo good. Like cotton candy. I use it before I shave because it really does an amazing job at removing any dead skin and it doesnât leave a residue, so it wonât clog your razor. However, itâs a sugar scrub, so it melts super quickly.
Ocean Salt This is a heavy-duty scrub. Really amazing if you have dry, flaky skin, and the healing properties of the salt are really great if you have acne. Itâll dry it up and heal it super quick.
Cup oâ Coffee Face & Body Mask Iâm on my fourth jar of this already. The coffee beans are ground up just enough to give a deep, yet gentle scrub and the caffeine in the bar really does wake up your skin and make it look brighter. Great for the morning.
Buffy It smells like a vacation, thatâs really the only way to describe it. Itâs an exfoliant bar and body butter mixed together, so you rub it all over while youâre still in the shower, and then rinse the sand off. After, rub the oils in and pat dry. No need for lotion after because it seals in the moisture from your shower.
SHOWER GELS / JELLIES
Rose Jam Shower Gel Smells like roses and has a really bubbly lather. More cleansing than moisturizing. I like to use it before a more moisturizing soap because itâs great for removing dirt and oil from the skin.
The Olive Branch Shower Gel A long-time favorite of mine. Great for dry skin, as it has a really creamy lather versus a bubbly one. Also, the smell is very calming and lingers for a long time.
Needles & Pines Shower Jelly Itâs a solid shower gel (consistency of jello), and it smells like Christmas trees! I like to store it in the fridge and use it when itâs hot outside, super cleansing and refreshing.
SOAPS:
Roses All the Way Personal favorite! Smells like roses & vanilla ice cream. Super moisturizing and so, so creamy. Definitely buy if you suffer from dry skin.
Yog Nog Very moisturizing and the scent lingers for a really long time. Smells like snickerdoodles and eggnog.
Bohemian Not at all creamy, as itâs an exfoliating soap. Itâs great to use on dark spots like knees and armpits because the exfoliants soften the skin and the lemon juice evens out your skintone. Smells like lemons.
Karma Another favorite. It has a super thin consistency but is still very moisturizing, so itâs a good shaving soap because it wonât gunk up your razor. Smells like incense and patchouli.
Figs & Leaves Smells like dirt and grass, in a good way. Super cleansing. As in your skin will literally squeak after using it, so I recommend using an in-shower moisturizer like King of Skin after using it.
OTHER:
Atomic Toothy Tabs Solid toothpaste that you crush up in your mouth. It sounds weird but these things are phenomenal. They really leave your teeth squeaky clean, and are the sole reason my teeth are so white - I donât use any whitening products. This particular kind smells like cloves and cinnamon.
Ultrabalm All Purpose Balm This stuff is amazing. Itâs an all-over balm for rough spots. I use it in the winter time on my hands and lips, because they get dry. I also use it year round on my face where I get dry spots, as it doesnât clog pores.
Silky Underwear Dusting Powder Another holy grail. If you could turn cocoa butter into a powder, this would be it. Itâs not drying like baby powder, itâs more silky (itâs also talc-free). I use it between my legs to prevent chafing and under my boobs when itâs hot outside to prevent sweating.
This is actually so helpful because a lot of times I go into lush and I just end up getting pink things and things that smell good because I donât know what other products are worth purchasing!
I want to repost this because this post is SO helpful. Some of the products on here have really helped with my eczema and acne and helped my hair become so much healthier. I bought products back in February or March and I still havenât ran out of them today in September. If you see something on this list that could /maybe/ help TRY IT ! Also make sure you talk to a LUSH employee if you arenât sure about a product, they spend A LOT of time making sure they know every detail of a product so they can help you

Hey guys. Iâm glad to be finally posting my âmental breakdown survival guideâ. As you know I struggle a lot with mental health, and so I have been through a lot of breakdowns. So many that I actually dropped out of university after 3 weeks in 2016 and had to take the whole year off. Because of this, Iâve made it my mission to help others with mental health issues as much as I can, so you donât have to go through what Iâve been through.
Anyway, here is my guide. I tried to keep it general, and actually useful. If you have any questions or additions please feel free to add them.
And as ever, if you want to talk to me about studying with mental illness or want to see a post on a specific topic, please feel free to message me.
thank you so much for this
In case no one told you growing up
Bras last longer if you let them air dry. Donât put them in the dryer.
If you have a problem with frizzy hair, donât dry your hair with a towel. It makes the frizzies worse. (I recently read an article that said to use a t-shirt? I brush mine out and let it air dry.)
Whites wash best in hot water. Everything else can be in cold - save on your electricity bill.
You can kill 99.9% of germs in a sponge by putting it in the dishwasher for a cycle or by microwaving it for 2 min (be sure to make the sponge damp before microwaving and to put a cup half full of water in with it and please DO NOT squeeze the sponge until it has cooled off)
Airing out your room/house and letting sunlight in every so often can decrease the number of household pests like silverfish and ants.
Black underwear is best during your period as stains are less likely to be visible.
To save money, put aside 10% of each paycheck into a savings account. Itâll add up.
Unless your hair has something on/in it (like grease or mud or something), using conditioner first can actually be the better choice. The conditioner holds in the good oils that help you hair look sleek and beautiful, which shampoo would otherwise wash away.
Speaking of shampoo - if you have long hair, washing just the bits that touch your scalp is generally enough. The rest of your hair gets cleaned with just the run off from your scalp.
If you put a tampon in and itâs uncomfortable/you can feel it, you didnât do it quite right. A properly placed tampon is virtually unnoticeable by the wearer.
Apply deodorant/antiperspirant a couple hours in advance of when you need it. This gives the product the chance to block your sweat glands. Using deodorant just before going somewhere where youâll sweat (this means walking outside for people in high humidity places) results in your sweat washing the deodorant off and starkly limiting its usefulness.
After running the dryer, use the dryer sheet from that load to brush out the lint catch - it gets everything off in a fraction of the time itâll take you to get it clean with your bare hands. Paper towels also work well.
Wash your face everyday, or as often as possible. Forget which brand of cleanser is best. Just washing your face everyday will guarantee you clearer skin. And do you best not to pop pimples, as tempting as the urge may be.
Fold laundry asap after taking it from the dryer to avoid wrinkles. This may seem obvious for dress shirts and silly for things like t-shirts, but youâll notice the difference even then once your shirts stop looking like unfolded paper balls.
To all the kids whose parents couldnât help you with this kind of stuff
Addition: the natural acidity of a vagina can bleach the gusset on darker underwear. Itâs perfectly normal.

Time stood still for a while, your hand was holding mine. The stars that shined in your eyes, donât let them go by. Fly on you golden girl and take on your fears. Iâll be with you in your dreams, the world is darker than it seems. [chorus] And Iâll be waiting for the light that guides us through the worst of nights. And Iâll be waiting for the sign youâre coming back and you have found your path. I know that youâve seen the worst your heartâs been torn before. Those creatures wonât let you go so hang on to what you know. So sail on you golden girl and fight against those fears. Iâll be with you in your dreams, all the world without a queen Chorus x3
Lettering tips
I did a thing! :D Itâs been ages since I made some sort of a lettering tips/tutorial (it was just an answered ask and it was pretty bad tbh), so I thought Iâd make a new one. Nothing too complicated, just filling more pages in my bullet journal :).
Now, these are tips that I sort of discovered myself and am using now, which doesnât mean that you have to! I did not include the âdouble the downstrokeâ which we all sort of know, rather I concentrated more on the letter heights, which was a big problem for me when I started with lettering. Well, hope you find it at least a bit helpful :D

[How To Improve Your Cursive]
Things NOT To Do When Studying
I was going through some old papers from freshman year and I was thinking about what I was doing wrong when I didnât achieve the grades I wanted, even though I got As in my classes. What things could I have done better to get a 100 instead of a 96? I donât ask myself this so much as to be a perfectionist (even though I am one). I ask myself these questions because: 1) I must not have had a completely solid understanding of the material if I couldnât get a 100 on it. 2) Maybe my less-than-stellar test-taking skills got in the way. 3) Iâm a tutor, so I want to be sure I understand everything thoroughly enough to help others with the material.
I may add to this later, so you can always check out the original post here. As always, feel free to comment or message me if you want to add something to this list!
General:
Donât simply read over your notes to study. It doesnât work. You might pick up pieces here and there or even memorize certain things verbatim, but reading something 20 times is very inefficient. Your brain learns by making connections, so if youâre only straight reading the material youâre not making extra connections. Youâre much better off going through your notes to make your own questions and quizzing yourself on them, marking down connections as you read (either in the margin or by literally connecting them in the text with a pen), or creating a study sheet (whether in text format or a mind map).
Donât simply highlight, either. While there is a proper way to highlight, most people I see using a highlighter are doing it wrong. If youâre the person who highlights 90% of the paragraph, Iâm talking about you. Okay, so highlighting is physically more active than glancing over your notes 20 times, but itâs about equally as effective if youâre highlighting everything. I recommend instead highlighting (or marking with eraseable pencil) things you want to go back to later. But, again, highlighting and reading alone is not useful. Go back to your highlighted parts to reread something that was hard to understand the first time, a topic you want to revisit to make a review sheet, etc. Whatever you use it for, make sure the purpose is to quickly find information later, not simply so you can read those things again. Try making a study sheet, in your own words, based off of your highlighting.
Donât forget to write things down. And I donât mean just in your planner when you have homework or papers due. This isnât so much about getting absolutely everything down in terms of notes, either, I have a separate post regarding that. But in class you should always write down questions you have and the answer. If you donât get a chance to ask during class, ask ASAP whether itâs directly to your teacher or asking a classmate. If itâs that important, do some research on it, too. Also, make sure you write down information on due dates or paper topics. You probably already do that, but I would recommend having a piece of paper with you every day where you can write anything important down like dates and to-dos to organize all in one shot. If you simply write down âpaper dueâ in a block in your planner before rushing to the next you may not see that reminder until close to the due date. I like to take all of the information on the piece of paper (which also has my day planned out and a to-do list) right when I get up in the morning so Iâm prepared for the day and donât forget anything.
What I Did Wrong:
Donât take it easy at the start of the semester. To be perfectly honest, Iâve pretty much always done that, but my freshman year of college it wasnât a huge deal since I pretty much already took those classes. Sophomore year, however, everything was new, so memorization and understanding didnât come quite as easily. The harder your classes are, the more essential this is, especially if you actually want to sleep during finals week. The best thing you can do is start doing work before the semester even starts if you have a syllabus handy, or even just looking through your books to see whatâs ahead. While everyone else is doing fun things the night of that first day, make sure you get some work done first before you have your fun. This sets the tone for the rest of the semester and gets you into the habit of working. Donât let yourself get behind! Itâs easier to stay ahead than it is to struggle catching up.
Donât leave your notes to rot after class. Meaning, do something with them right after class! ⌠or at least ASAP. Mark them up, edit them, rework them, copy or type them (if your handwriting sucks like me), or, best of all, write a short summary. Take the several pages of notes you have and condense them into one or two paragraphs. Donât worry about the details, just make sure youâre hitting on the key points. As a bonus, you can type up some questions based off of your notes to save for later studying (details are allowed here). Everything will be fresh, making this a much easier process than if you did it right before the test. At the end of the week, make a summary of your summaries and quiz yourself on the questions you made. Youâll probably want to use those questions again, so try to reword them or even combine them into bigger questions that cover many topics. That way youâre being active with the material and will actually understand what youâre answering as opposed to parroting.
Donât make study sheets by copying off of something else. Yes, I made this mistake. I wasnât copying initially, but rather, using a review book as a reference to make study sheets. However, the more I was pressed for time the less I started putting things into my own words. Now, this wasnât a big deal in terms of legality, since I kept them to myself, but it didnât turn out to be all that helpful in the end. If you want to make study sheets, you could either take concepts youâve been learning and put them together in different ways or make a summary in your own words. I recommend both, but whatever you do, make sure youâre actually creating something new or else youâre not going to remember it. For example, in organic chemistry I took the reactions and grouped them in different ways (by subtstrate, reactants, products, etc.) as a reference while studying. The act of sorting and looking through the reactions in order to make the sheets helped me remember them, then I had the sheets to look at while doing practice to help me memorize them further.
Donât save the bulk of lab work for after the lab and donât wait to write your report. By this Iâm referring to the post-lab report. Spend the extra time while prepping your pre-lab materials to start your report! Youâre expected to know the theory behind your labs before you perform them, so writing the introduction to your report should not be a problem. If it is, then youâll be glad you took the time to understand the lab before you tried actually doing it. By doing this you may also find that you have questions that can be answered by the professor before you get confused in the middle of a procedure. Also make sure you have data tables prepared (not just in your notebook, but in the report file to fill in after) and anything else youâll need to take down data. Once the lab is finished do the report immediately. Everything you did will be fresh and youâll be glad you finished it well ahead of the deadline. At this point you can show your lab to your professor and get any corrections fixed so youâre ashooinâ for an A!
Donât try to write a paper in one shot. I understand if you feel like your papers flow better if you do it all in one shot, but at least make sure you plan it out thoroughly ahead of time before you actually write it all out. But even then, you will likely benefit from splitting your paper into chunks to tackle one day at a time. If you have a research paper thatâs double-digit pages then youâll be forced to do that anyway, but be sure youâre splitting up the work for small papers, as well. It may not seem like a big deal to do a short paper in one day, but if you end up having other assignments or tests due around the same time it might up your stress if youâre crunched for time trying to finish that âinsignificantâ paper while juggling a few other assignments as well as some test prep.
Advice Suggested By Others:
Donât listen to distracting music while studying. To some degree, the types of music that are considered âdistractingâ vary when it comes to the subject youâre studying and personal preference. However, the general rule of thumb is that you avoid any sort of music with lyrics if youâre studying a subject that involves language. Art, math, and certain sciences are an exception if youâre working with pictures or numbers, since language usually doesnât interfere with those things in the brain. But if youâre reading anything, even if itâs worded directions to a math or science problem, lyrics will probably be distracting. Some people suggest that listening to new music with lyrics is okay because you wonât be tempted to sing along with something you donât know while others get distracted by hearing any type of language. Again, itâs truly up to you, but genres such as classical, jazz, and nature sounds are usually recommended. Heck, if youâre a musician and get distracted by any type of music, silence or brown noise may be the better option for you. (Suggested by aslongasitsfiction)
Donât study in bed. Scientific studies have shown that doing anything in your bed that isnât sleep or sex-related affects your ability to fall asleep in your bed. When your brain primarily associates your bed with sleep, itâs much easier to fall asleep. But having trouble sleeping in your bed isnât the only part of the problem. While studying in your bed is really comfy, youâre also more likely to fall asleep if the association with sleep is strong enough. Itâs generally recommended that you donât even study in the same room as your bed, but as college students this may not be possible if you want to use your desk. So if you donât want to make the trek out to a more secluded study space, at least try to make sure your desk doesnât have your bed in view. Because letâs be honest, if youâre exhausted, simply seeing your bed might be enough to make you nod off. (Suggested by rare-footage and ane-mia)
Donât go on tumblr. Okay, this may seem obvious, but sometimes a reminder is all you need to get off your computer! I suppose itâs better that youâre looking up information to help you study, but I think we both know what the better choice would be. (Suggested by oneofakindgizibe)
Donât study in a place you canât focus just because your friends are there. Us humans are social animals. We like being around other people. But this can cause you problems if youâre trying to study. Unless youâre in a productive study group, make sure you separate study time and social time. Youâre probably more likely to gravitate towards fun, social things over studying, so make sure studying is a priority and you get it done before seeing your friends. If you have a roommate or two, then your dorm room is probably not the right place to study. Find a few of your focus hotspots and go there for your study time. (Suggested by fitspoforever)
Donât forget the little things you know youâll need. This includes but is not limited to things such as chargers, books, snacks, and water. You donât want to be in-the-zone and all of the sudden realize you need to run back to your dorm room to get a book. And then 10 minutes later realize youâre hungry and need to run to the cafeteria. If you donât already have certain things that are always in your bag, simply keep a list of things you generally need to bring with you, leave it as a reminder on your desk, and check it over before you hit the library. (Suggested by fitspoforever)
Donât take naps while studying without setting an alarm. Or even better, avoid naps all together. If youâre like me, 15-minute naps usually turn into 2-hour events. But regardless, if you need to get some extra sleep, get the extra sleep. Itâs better to take a nap when you know you need it as opposed to falling asleep on your desk unexpectedly when you have a paper you need to get done for the next day. 15-20 minutes the recommended time for a short nap, but if you need something more robust, try for 90 minutes or use sleepyti.me to figure out the right time to wake up. (Suggested by fitspoforever)
Donât wear uncomfortable clothes. I personally find that âdressing for successâ works really well for going to lectures and virtually everything else, but terribly if youâre hitting the library for a long study session. Youâll probably wanna look cute if youâre heading somewhere public, but just make sure youâre comfortable. Yoga pants are fine for the occasion! (Suggested by fitspoforever)
Tips That Can Save Your Kidâs Life.
THIS IS IMPORTANTÂ
When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didnât want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase âpeanut butter cups.â (Iâm happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now).Â
I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didnât want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didnât know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked âHey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?â And she said âIâll be right there.â And she came and got me within minutes.Â
Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable - ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didnât seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldnât worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only âwomanâ around that wasnât related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked âNext time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? Iâve been craving them.â And she came and got me, just like that.Â
Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Donât discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.Â
DO NOT SCROLL PAST THAT.
Off topic, but very important! I was taught to yell âthis is not my mom/dad.â A young kid freaking out in public is likely to be ignored out of embarrassment, but a kid telling you right out that they donât know who is messing with them? That will turn heads.
my grandma told me something yesterday that pretty much changed my outlook on life. we were having dinner and talking about my future, and how all of my friends seem to be doing so much better than i am, and she looked at me and said âhey, if we all had the same path in life the road would be too crowdedâ and i havenât stopped thinking about that since.
