(spoilers) I ended up with the full pacifist ending where everyone lives. And this is considered the ‘happy’ ending…
But lets look at the moments that kicked *me* in the teeth, shall we?
The scene in the church after Jericho is sunk.
Markus has to decide Connor’s fate (obviously I went with ‘trust’ BUT…)
1) Connor is in a corner on his fucking own. Looking sad, small, and scared. The poor guy has just deviated and instead of experiencing the fluffy ‘found family’ route experienced by all the other protagonists, Connor is not only being ignored, he’s been actively shunned.
2) All the other deviants are huddled together, consoling each other, talking to each other, patching each other’s wounds etc. None of them even look sideways at Connor.
3) If you choose to NOT TRUST Connor: Markus shoots him. If this happens: NO ONE BATS AN EYELID. No one jumps, turns their head, or questions what the fuck just happened.
4) Meaning most (if not all) of Jericho’s surviving residents don’t trust Connor, at all. And Connor knows this, he knows there’s a chance he’s just waiting to be executed.
5) Even if Markus decides to trust Connor, we don’t see anyone changing their tune towards him after that. The only person from Jericho who shows Connor *any* faith in my playthrough is Markus himself. And even then, it’s fleeting.
6) The implication of this is that Connor Deviated, betrayed his makers, put himself in great danger, and liberated thousands of androids… only for his own kind to barely tolerate him. And, in the scene I saw, Markus himself says something along the lines of: ‘we can’t rely on Connor, we can only trust ourselves’
Like, fucking thanks bro! Connor risks life and limb to prove himself to you and Markus is all ‘nah, he probably won’t make it.’
7) In the final scene he’s stood at the back of the shipping container, isolated. No one looks at him, no one celebrates with him. No one smiles at him. (And then: Amanda happens.)
8) Everyone is so Not Arsed ™ with what’s going on with Connor, they don’t even notice he’s been hijaked by Cyberlife. He has to re-break his programming again, alone.
I don’t know guys. I’m glad Connor can be considered a person by the end of the game, and can have freedom away from Cyberlife. But the guy now seems so very alone, even amongst his own kind he’s still on the fringes of what they will tolerate.
