The Vision of Escaflowne Episode 7 Screenshot Redraw

Ever since I got to know a bit of “The Vision of Escaflowne”, this one scene in episode 7 always stood out to me. In the original Japanese version along with the Funimation redub, I can never get over how Hitomi hiccups as cutely as a chipmunk or mouse after getting herself drunk from three glasses of wine/vino. Granted, she DOES end up getting captured after a certain… revelation (wink, wink). But, and I paraphrase Bow about Catra’s sneeze, I can hardly believe the whole time Hitomi’s respective actresses (Maaya Sakamoto and Caitlin Glass) career in voice acting, and they had the cutest hiccups of all time! ^_^

On the other hand, as for the drawing itself, I realized I got some proportions off and Hitomi’s eyes in this shot look rather crooked. Not to mention the background and foreground look a bit off. But if I should try again next time, I might get this as accurate as I possibly can.

The thing is we do see the evidence that Van knows his diplomatic responsibilities, he knows what is expected of him as a king, we see how people think so little of him, of his kingdom, his people.

But. He's 15 years young, recently lost his brother (again)(forever), has the trauma of war (a blood lust. A craving for vengence. A little boy forced into a warrior, terrified of the rage inside, so goddamn angry and lonely), has NOBODY but a younger sister and scattered friends in adjoining nations...

In fanfiction he has advisors, but in canon his generals were killed, his people were scattered, everything fell onto his shoulders to build again...

And on top of all that, he's got to be mature and loving enough to let the girl he's in love with, who he's already followed across the universe to reunite with, go back to the world she comes from, losing her support as he rebuilds his nation from the ground up?
