“Little conservative there, aren’t we?” Dawn teased, sidling up beside her half sister with a grin. “Not that you don’t look like a total hottie.”
lxgions:
@dddawned
“Even now I lie awake knowing history has its eyes on me.”
“History has it’s eyes on all of us. We just have decide if we leave something worth remembering when we’re gone.”
chaxticgood:
Miri considers it for a split second before she grins. “Well, I can teleport us there. Save on travel time and expense. Tower of Terror sounds like fun. And no one will mind if we’re gone a day or two, I’m sure.”
“Let’s aim for next weekend, yeah? I can reach out to some friends I have in the mutant network and see if we can stay with any of them while we’re there. And before you say anything, I promise not to get wrapped up in work by accident. Again.”
bllykpln:
“You could say that, but I like our version of weird.” Billy admits with a nod. “Normal isn’t any fun.”
“Our version of weird is most definitely the best version of weird,” Dawn agreed with a grin. “The haters are just jealous.”
feelthestcrm:
“Yeah, I know.” Tommy wasn’t unsympathetic to his cousin’s struggle but he couldn’t even begin to relate. “You still would be better off talking to Billy or someone about this stuff. No one’s ever asked infamous mutant school bomber Thomas Shepherd to help fight for our rights.”
“Don’t worry, I’m not asking for help with the fight. No, I think what I really need right now is a good distraction. Something to just take my mind off of everything I have going on so I can actually relax for a bit. Think you could maybe help me with something like that?”
greenhairedmama:
“yes I absolutely did, problem with that? am i getting too cool for you?” lorna’s smug expression melted as Dawn took in what she meant, growing into a warm smile. she nods as her daughter talks, even chuckling out loud, unable to resist at her reaction filled with joy. lorna’s heart warmed at the idea, that Dawn would be the one to take over the Underground. sure, it was going to take time to get to that point, but lorna had no doubt she’d be able to handle it. in a sense? the Underground is what made Dawn, despite her choice to leave for the Hellfire Club, “completely serious. i think that you could get the hang of it easily. there’s a few different bases we’ve been worrying about,” she begins, waving a hand with a quick green glow to swing her door shut before taking out a map of the U.S., the eastern seaboard littered with different points marked ACTIVE or ABANDONED or DESTROYED, “some of these are pretty old, but here and here,” she points to a station in a town near Paragon, and one a bit further away in New Jersey, “are the ones that need our help. the one nearby is new, I’ve been working on getting it off the ground lately.” she looks up at her, “do you think you could help with that?”
“No, but you may have just ruined ‘on point’ for me,” she teased, beaming at her mother. But that’s all she can manage before the idea of helping with the Underground claims her every last thought. Pushing herself from her current perch, Dawn moved to the desk, looking over the map Lorna had laid out. Eyes scan over each and every marked out base, already working to commit the entire network to memory. Her mother’s voice cuts through then, and her focus gears towards the two bases being indicated. “Absolutely,” she said without hesitation, demeanor turning more serious. “Tell me what you have and what you need. I’ll see if I can add anything to the list that may not have been thought of. Then I can prioritize the more important items and start tackling things from there.” The sooner they could open the base, the sooner they could help more mutants in need.
ofgerrys:
Okay, he had an interior motive. These sorts of things- why people turn out for rallies, why people gather in such large groups, why people did the wave at sporting events- interested Gerry. “You base how you do off of crowd participation? What if the crowd’s full of dicks who don’t- participate? But respect what you have to say?” His tater tots had come, the bartender sat them down in front of him, and Gerry slid the tray between them. “You can have some. Or I could get you a drink instead?”
“I base how I’ve done on how large of a crowd we get. Even if not everyone shows up for the right reason, it’s still more people hearing what we have to say. I have an opportunity to change some minds, and that right there marks a success.” Eyeing the food a moment, Dawn reached for a tot and popped it into her mouth. Speaking always made her hungry. “Well, I’ve never been one to turn down a free drink.”
chaxticgood:
Of course they’d have to come back. While the impulse to run away and never look back was certainly there, and Miri had almost acted on it before, she knew she’d come back. There’s people here she couldn’t leave forever. “Where would we go?”
“Well,” Dawn hummed, leaning forward on her elbows as she thought it over, “We could make a trip to Florida. I’ve never been to Disney World, and riding the Tower of Terror has been on my bucket list for years.”
greenhairedmama:
lorna laughs out loud, “yeah, bring me to a protest where the Les Miserables harmonies are on point, and I’ll die happy.” she gives her daughter a fond look, “hey, you just have to ask, I’ll be there in full Polaris garb if you want,” she purses her lips in thought a moment before continuing, measuring dawn’s reaction as it comes, “question: how would you like to help me with some Underground stuff? I’m feeling a bit overloaded, and I think you might be able to do some good with them.”
“Did you really just use ‘on point’ to describe Les Mis?” Dawn asked with a laugh. “But yeah, I would definitely be into having you as a super secret guest speaker.” Just the thought of running one of her rallies with her mother by her side brought a smile to her lips. One that only grew at Lorna’s question regarding the Underground. “Are you serious?! Working with the Underground is a literal dream of mine. Helping my fellow mutant, giving them somewhere they can feel safe...it’s all I’ve ever wanted.” Was she hyperventilating? It felt like she was hyperventilating.
bllykpln:
“I get that a lot, and I’m okay with it.” Billy laughs as well. “I’ve always been weird I suppose so I’m embracing it.”
“Pretty sure we’re a family of weird,” Dawn pointed out. “But then, being normal is vastly overrated anyhow, so I don’t entirely mind our weird.”

ofgerrys:
( @dddawned ) Gerry had not made an effort to be at a mutant activism rally, events like that really wasn’t his scene these days. But he had, and he had listened. Really tried to listen, he’d only zoned out once. And Gerry was proud of himself for that. And he had, actually learned something. So when one of the speakers, Dawn was her name, maybe, maybe Drew (like his last name!), sat down next to him at the bar, of course he was going to say something. “hi- Dawn? I’m Gerry, I was at the rally earlier. I’ve never been to one-,” a lie, “-and I just- wanted to say that I liked your speech.”
As she did after most rallies, Dawn found herself heading to one of the local bars. It was her way of decompressing and coming down from the high she gained from speaking. Replaying the events in her mind, she decided it had gone well overall, something signified by a lack of Sentinel Services being called. They were the honest bane of her existence. Claiming an empty seat, she was pulled from her thoughts by the utterance of her name, attention drawn to the man sitting beside her. “That would be me, yeah. Based on the crowd, you weren’t alone in that. Definitely one of the loudest reactions I’ve had yet. In the best way possible, of course.”
bllykpln:
“My kitten is using my shoe for a bed, and I can’t get over how cute this is.”
“I genuinely don’t even know how to respond to you sometimes,” she said with a laugh.
shincbrightcr:
“Very inspiring.” Nadir says quietly, tilting his head to the side a little. He’s heard Dawn’s speeches before and they’re always inspiring in one way or another. “You think it’ll make a difference?”
“I think I’m just gonna keep on talking until it does,” she answered, nothing but truth in her words. Dawn was willing to give everything to the mutant rights movement, no matter what that meant. She was very much her parent’s child in that way. "The world is changing. Who says it can’t change for the better.”
