The death note musical took a look at the manga (chickened out), the anime (cut for time), the films (genderswapped) and the jdrama (written around), sighed, and gave remisa not one but two explicitly romantic ballads out of spite

I found a little fascinating historical clue at the Foundling Museum today... perhaps a little something for Mello.

In 18th-century Britain, when children were taken into foundling hospitals, they were stripped of their past and given entirely new names—a completely new identity. And historically, a lot of these orphans would officially leave the institution right around the age of 14 to be sent out into the world and enter the workforce.

Mello left Wammy’s House just before he turned 15.

It might just be a pure coincidence, of course (the Foundling Hospital is an 18th-century reality, after all). But living in the UK just means you are constantly stumbling upon these tiny historical traces—these little real-world echoes—that inevitably pull my thoughts right back to him.

forever biting things about near btw. What if you were 13 and got told the man whose identity you had to replace was already dead. what if that man didn’t even reach twice your age. What if you hated every second of it but there’s nothing else for you to do anyway. what if you have to do it alone. What if you have people surrounding you, people who you trust, who you never ever show that trust to because you don’t understand your emotions and you don’t want them anyway. What if the only other person who went through the exact same thing as you dies. what if he was only a year and a half older than you. what if you cant tell if it was a necessary sacrifice or if he just really wanted to die. What if you won despite and because of him. What if you didnt win, anything, at all, in any way. What if you were 27. What if you were wondering when it was your turn. What if you kept living.

I will forever be pissed at the people in the Death Note fandom that only like Mello for his looks but completely overlook his characteristics and his trauma. The pain of trying hard to achieve something but in the end it goes down the drain because there is and there will always be that one person that people deem better than you and that person will always be paraded and praised while you drown in your failure and push yourself harder every day to try and surpass them and raise into the spotlight. He always felt angry and unseen,always chasing the first place and in the end his that obsession with being first was his doom. While we don't know very much about him from the manga, we know he left Wammy's house at 14/15 when L died but later we find out more about his upbringing in The Los Angeles BB murder cases which he narrates. We also know that Mello had been in the mafia for about a year, but we never find out what he was doing before joining them. I wish we knew more about Mello and Nate as their own characters rather then them just being L's successors, there's a bit information about them in the Death note short stories edition, but it would be really cool if we got their backstories
