//hello people of tumblr! quick update: I have not gone for good! long story short: I decided it was a good idea to take two classes at once this semester (which will allow me to finish my doctorate 6 months early, but is currently A Lot) and also found out my job will be changing next year which has demanded a lot more work from me in my current role than usual. I want dearly to return here, and I will! please do not think I am gone for good, and if we have threads together, I would love to continue them!

The Ecto-1 was a 1959 Cadillac with a Miller-Meteor ambulance body that was meant to double as a (stylish and futuristic) hearse. Because it was an extremely specialized vehicle, only 400 like it were ever made. Three total were used in the filming of the first two Ghostbusters movies (as far as anyone can confirm). This is fairly well-known but required info for one of my favourite weird stories cause I like figuring out where props come from/go and I love theme parks.

The 2024 Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights featured a house based on the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire movie. They decided to include - as is their norm for this event - as many incredibly specific detials and easter eggs for the franchise as possible. In the culminating scene, there is a full-sized, completely accurate Ecto-1. And it's the real thing. Except to make it work for the house, they only used the front half of it and put it on a track so it would appear to be busting through a wall when people entered the room. The lights and sirens were fully functional! The inside looked identical to the original 1984 movie. And they, apparently, went hunting for the exact vehicle, cut it in half, and then created an exact replica. (Not the same as the one that drives around the park. That's another car that was modified and painted to be as close as possible).

But some digging showed that, in January of 2024, Universal Studios bought just the front half of the car from a closed-down body shop in West Virginia (I think they got the rest of it delivered separately lol). There was a lot of skepticism as to what the car would be used for, seeing as it definitely couldn't function. People speculated that it would be used for a parade or decoration, and maybe they kept it for that! But the reveal of the Ecto in the house for HHN that year was kept pretty secret. No one was allowed to take pictures of the car behind the scenes.

Now, this is what I was told. I don't have sources to prove that the info I was told while I was there was real. There was also a version of the house that year in Hollywood that I know nothing about. This car is LARGE and imposing, especially inside. I literally cried when I saw it. I didn't know it would be in there. With the soundstage lights on during the day, you could see all the details they made sure to include. It was absolutely insane.
