I'll write up an actual post about this later, but I really do think Leon's scariest experience was being infected with las plagas because not only was it something he's never dealt with, but he's got a huge fear of failure and losing control of himself, and the fact that while infected he was basically forced into obedience (physically) numerous times already, and the prospect of that happening entirely and just becoming a puppet to the parasite was terrifying.

Also just the fact that the cure to it wasn't as easy as being like "here's a vaccine" but rather "here's a cure that's gonna be painful as fuck, and isn't guaranteed to work/might kill you".
