queen and tenna have a very similar thing going on where they want to provide for lightners but do so in a way that negatively affects both the lightners themselves/the fun gang and the darkners surrounding them

but after their respective chapters came out, queen was painted as this cruel ass lady who'd throw a man into acid for being broke (not even confirmed canon) and tenna as this sad hurt man who only did wrong cause he wanted to be loved and i gotta say there's something about that that rubs me the wrong way

Everything you said about Lancer is so right but I'm not sure he'll be back the way he was in chapter 1, unfortunately. I'd love to be wrong, but one pattern I'm noticing with these is that after a Dark Fountain closes the Darkners from the last chapters barely do anything thereafter. Like Queen had barely any lines, Spamton was referenced a few times but we didn't learn anything much else except he was divorced for the millionth time, Jevil did jack all except gamble. We got one snippet of Seam lore that might not even be relevant, Rouxls is pretty much a stock joke character... I could go on.

Then again, Lancer and Rouxls are still around and present in the later Dark Worlds so if anyone's going to have plot relevance post-chapter I do believe they'll be the two to do it. It's tentative hope, but it's there. All I can say is I really do miss all the old art from ch1 where Lancer was an unequivocal part of the Fun Gang. Like you used to NEVER see just the trio, it was always the four of them. :(

but yeah you make a good point about past chapters being sort of benched. and like meatloaf said, even if he isn’t narratively crucial anymore that doesn’t change how influential and important of a character lancer has been already. i think i just would really like to see more of his story. i still think he’s got a lot to work through.

that being said, i really appreciated that he continued to participate in ch3, even after ch2 established a believable reason to exclude him entirely from future dark world endeavors. though he wasn’t super relevant and wasn’t undergoing any kind of character progression, i was still happy that he joined us. it seems that the narrative still considers him a part of the fun gang, at least, even if he’s not a large influence on the plot anymore.

I would like to add how crucial lancer is to the other darkners adjusting to castle town. Hanging out w Queen. Drying off Tenna when he’s caught in the rain. I’d like to believe that adding those little areas that feel more like home to the person whose room it belongs to was his idea too.

Silly as it is, everyone seems to trust him whenever Ralsei’s busy with the dark fountains to keep things going and to keep spirits high, even with what little he’s able to contribute. He’s still a Prince in his own right, after all.

He would have been an excellent king.
